Chapter 7 - The Recovery of Trust

Three days had passed since the night the lights went out.
The hospital had returned to its state of quiet, sterile efficiency. The security systems had been completely overhauled, the local police had taken Vance Miller into custody—where he was remanded to a high-security psychiatric facility—and the story of the "Hero Brother of Room 402" had spread quietly through the pediatric wing.
Daniel sat in the comfortable armchair in Laura’s private recovery room. Laura was sitting up in bed, her color returned, eating a bowl of fruit.
Ethan was sitting on the window sill, a sketchbook open on his knees. He was drawing a picture of a superhero with a giant "E" on his chest, holding a tiny baby in a protective shield.
"The doctor says I can go home tomorrow," Laura said, her voice soft and peaceful.
"And Sophie?" Daniel asked.
"She’s breathing entirely on her own now," Laura smiled, her eyes shining. "They’re moving her out of the incubator and into a regular crib by this afternoon. If she keeps gaining weight, we can bring her home by the end of the week."
Daniel looked at Ethan. "What do you think, buddy? Ready to have your sister home?"
Ethan looked up from his drawing. "Can I help set up her room?"
"Of course you can," Laura said. "In fact, we were hoping you’d help us choose the color for her walls. You have the best eye for detail."
Ethan’s face lit up. "Blue. Like the sky. Not hospital blue, but the blue right before the sun comes up."
"I think that’s perfect," Daniel said.
A knock on the door interrupted them. Nurse Megan Blake stepped in, wearing a fresh set of scrubs and carrying a small, wrapped box.
"I hope I'm not interrupting," she said, smiling warmly.
"Megan!" Laura said. "Come in, please."
Megan walked over to Ethan and handed him the box. "This is for you, Ethan. From the entire nursing staff on the fourth floor."
Ethan carefully tore away the paper. Inside was a high-quality, professional-grade digital camera, complete with a strap that had "OFFICIAL SECURITY" printed on it in bold yellow letters.
"We figured since you have such a knack for spotting things the rest of us miss," Megan said with a wink, "you should have the right equipment. You're our honorary Chief of Security."
Ethan’s eyes went wide. He held the camera like it was made of gold. "Thank you, Nurse Megan!"
"You earned it, kiddo," Megan said, before turning to Daniel and Laura. "By the way, the hospital administration is finalizing the report. They’re issuing a public statement thanking your family, and... well, let's just say Sophie's medical bills are fully covered by the hospital’s insurance fund as an apology for the security breach."
Daniel let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding for months. The financial weight of a premature birth had been a dark cloud hanging over them. To have it lifted was a miracle in itself.

"Thank you, Megan. For everything," Daniel said, shaking her hand.
"We're a team," Megan said. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a very important patient to move into a regular crib."
