The sun dipped slowly below the horizon, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and rose.
Noah and I stood out on our back patio, watching the stars begin to twinkle in the clear night sky. Buster the puppy sat faithfully between our feet, panting happily after a long afternoon of chasing tennis balls across the grass.
"Mom?" Noah asked softly, looking up at me with bright, intelligent eyes.
"Yes, buddy?" I knelt down, resting my hands gently on his shoulders, making sure to avoid the ribs that had healed completely and strong.
"Are we ever going back to Grandma and Grandpa's house?"
His voice carried a tiny trace of lingering childhood uncertainty, the kind that reminded me of how deep emotional scars can run. But looking into his eyes, I saw no fear—only curiosity and trust.
I smiled, pulling him into a warm, unbreakable embrace, resting my chin against his soft hair.
"No, baby. We are never going back there," I whispered fiercely, my voice steady and filled with absolute promise. "We have our own home now. A home built on love, safety, and truth. Nobody will ever hurt you here, and nobody will ever make us stay silent again."
Noah wrapped his small arms tightly around my neck, burying his face in my shoulder with a contented sigh. "Good. Because I like our new life much better."
"Me too, sweetie. Me too."
We stood there together on the patio as the evening breeze rustled the leaves around us, wrapped in a blanket of absolute peace. The nightmare of that afternoon at Elmwood Drive felt like a lifetime away—a dark storm we had successfully weathered and left completely behind us.
