Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Empire

Richard Vance glared at his brother, then looked at the crowd of teenagers recording everything on their phones. He realized within a fraction of a second that the situation was slipping out of his control. The Vance name was being dragged through the mud in front of the entire town.
"We are leaving. Now," Richard ordered, grabbing Steven’s arm. "Steven, come with me. Marcus, you’ll hear from my lawyers."
"They won't be able to reach him in federal custody, Richard," Marcus countered smoothly.
Two men in dark suits stepped through the front doors of the hotel, bypassing the hotel staff. They carried badges around their necks. The State Bureau of Investigation had arrived. Marcus had used his connections well; by presenting evidence of a conspiracy to commit a felony (the drugging of a minor) alongside evidence of local municipal corruption, the state authorities had bypassed the corrupted local police entirely.
"Richard Vance? Steven Vance?" the lead agent asked. "I’m Agent Miller with the SBI. We have a warrant to seize all electronic devices belonging to Steven Vance, and a grand jury subpoena for the city council financial records."
Richard’s political mask completely shattered. "On what grounds? This is a family matter! A high school drama!"
"The grounds of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance to a minor, felony assault, and extortion," Agent Miller said, his voice cold and professional. He turned to Steven. "Put your hands behind your back, son."
"Dad! Do something!" Steven yelled, his arrogant demeanor completely collapsing into frantic, childish terror. "Dad, tell them! You said we could handle the Adams family! You said they were nothing!"
The crowd watched in absolute awe as handcuffs clicked around Steven’s wrists. The white prom tuxedo now looked like a prison jumpsuit in training.
Richard Vance looked around the room, desperately searching for an ally, a friendly council member, anyone. But everyone looked away. In a small town, power shifts like the wind. The moment the state police arrived, Richard was no longer a powerful politician—he was a liability.
"Mr. Adams’s financial discrepancies will be dealt with by the state auditor," Marcus said to Richard, loud enough for everyone to hear. "And since you signed off on those false audits to protect your own embezzlement scheme, you’ll be sharing a cell block with your son quite soon."
Richard went pale. He didn't say another word as the agents led him and his sobbing son out of the Grand Hotel doors, past the flashing lights of the limousines, and into the back of an unmarked black SUV.
The lobby was silent again. The monster had been dragged away in chains.
Kayla stood in the center of the room. The weight of a year’s worth of abuse, fear, and secrecy seemed to lift from her shoulders all at once. She took a deep, ragged breath, and for the first time that day, a genuine smile touched her lips.
She looked at Reese, who was grinning from ear to ear, still holding the pink tape recorder like a trophy.

"We did it," Kayla whispered.
"I told you," Reese said proudly. "The radio show never lies."
