Chapter 9 - The Trial of Truth

Three months later, we stood in the Hartsboro Family Court for the final custody hearing.
Daniel sat at the petitioner’s table, wearing a dark suit he had bought specifically for the occasion. He looked clean, strong, and entirely transformed. Next to him sat our family law attorney, backed by a mountain of paperwork showing his steady income, his completed parenting classes, and his immaculate sobriety record.
My parents sat across the aisle. Without their casino money and their stolen stipends, they looked deflated, old, and bitter. Their high-priced attorney tried to argue that they were simply elderly grandparents who had become overwhelmed by the administrative burdens of kinship care.
The judge, a formidable woman named Judge Mirren, didn't even let them finish their opening statement. She slammed my forensic report down onto her bench.
“Mr. and Mrs. Nichols,” Judge Mirren said, her voice echoing through the courtroom like thunder. “I have reviewed the financial audit provided by the state and verified by the federal authorities. This isn't a case of an ‘overwhelmed’ family. This is a case of deliberate, systemic predatory behavior targeted at a defenseless child. You treated your granddaughter like an annuity.”
She turned her eyes to Daniel. “Mr. Nichols, the record shows that you were systematically deceived, threatened, and extorted by the very people who were supposed to protect your daughter. Your financial contributions were tracked, verified, and proven to have been diverted into casino slot machines and travel agencies. You have done everything required by this court to demonstrate your fitness as a father.”
The judge didn't even hesitate. She picked up her gavel.
“Full legal and physical custody of Lily Nichols is hereby returned to her biological father, Daniel Nichols. Effective immediately. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued against Carol and Roy Nichols. You are not to come within five hundred feet of this child, her school, or her residence for the rest of her natural life.”
Crack.

The sound of the gavel felt like the closing of a dark, heavy book.
Carol let out a low, pathetic whine, covering her face with her hands, while Roy simply stared at the table, finally realizing that the ledger had balanced out, and they were entirely bankrupt.
