Chapter 9 - The Invitation

As October came to a close, the autumn leaves turned vibrant shades of red and gold. Willa was now nine years old, thriving in school, a talented young artist, and the captain of her local soccer team.
One evening, while we were preparing dinner in our kitchen, David looked up from chopping vegetables. "Hey, Rachel, Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. What are we doing this year?"
Willa stopped setting the table, her eyes suddenly turning toward me. The old anxiety flickered in her expression for just a fraction of a second, a small reminder of the ghost we had left behind.
I walked over to her, wrapping my arms around her shoulders. "This year, sweetie, we are hosting. Right here in our house."
Willa’s face instantly lit up. "Can we invite Karen? And Clara? And David’s parents?"
"Absolutely," David cheered, throwing a piece of carrot to Barnaby, who caught it mid-air. "And we are going to make the biggest, most ridiculous Thanksgiving feast this neighborhood has ever seen. Everyone gets a real chair. In fact, everyone gets a throne if they want one."
Willa giggled, the last trace of the old fear dissolving into the warm kitchen air.
The next day, Willa sat down at the dining table with a massive stack of construction paper, glitter, glue, and a brand-new pack of markers. She spent three hours crafting individual invitations for every single guest.
I watched her from the kitchen doorway as she meticulously drew on each card. On the front of every invitation was a beautiful turkey with large, magnificent purple feathers. Inside, she wrote in her neat, proud cursive: “You are invited to a happy dinner. There is plenty of food for everyone, and everyone is loved.”
When she finished the last card, she brought it over to me. It was addressed to “Mommy and David.”
May you like
"Do you think they’ll like them, Mom?" she asked, her eyes shining with the same hope she had carried a year ago—but this time, that hope was safe.
"They are going to love them, Willa," I whispered, holding her close. "Because these cards are filled with real love."
