Chapter 6 - The Broken Mirror

While Daniel was taking his first steps toward redemption, Vanessa was spiraling.

Accustomed to being the center of attention and living a life of luxury, the sudden reduction in their lifestyle felt like a cruel punishment. Worse, her relationship with her own father had deteriorated because Richard held her strictly accountable for every penny spent.

To make matters worse, the family dynamics had shifted completely.

Aunt Clara and the other relatives had learned the full truth about how Eleanor had financed Daniel and Vanessa’s lives for years. The story of Vanessa’s behavior at the birthday party—and Daniel’s cruel laughter—had spread through the extended family. People who had once fawned over Vanessa’s glamorous posts now viewed her with cold contempt. At family gatherings, people treated Vanessa with distant politeness, while frequently visiting Eleanor and praising her newfound independence.

One afternoon, Vanessa went to visit her father, hoping to convince him to release some of her trust fund money early so she could buy a new car.

Richard sat in his study, reading a book. He didn't even look up when she walked in.

“Dad, this is ridiculous,” Vanessa complained, sitting across from him. “Daniel is working seven days a week. We never see each other. My car is embarrassing. And Eleanor is acting like a high-and-mighty queen, riding around town with some old retired guy!”

Richard closed his book with a loud thud. He looked at his daughter with a look of disappointment that chilled her to the bone.

“Do you know what I see when I look at you, Vanessa?” Richard asked calmly.

“What?” she huffed.

“A spoiled, mean-spirited woman who almost destroyed her husband’s life,” Richard said coldly. “You took a good man, isolated him from his mother, bled her dry of her retirement money, and then publicly humiliated her when she finally stood up for herself.”

“She was fat, Dad! It was a joke!” Vanessa snapped, her face turning red.

“She was a woman who was carrying the financial burden of YOUR vanity!” Richard shouted, slamming his hand on the desk. “You didn't insult her weight, Vanessa. You insulted her dignity because you thought she was helpless! You thought she would keep giving you money no matter how terribly you treated her!”

Vanessa shrank back in her chair, shocked by her father’s rage.

“Listen to me very carefully,” Richard warned, pointing a finger at her. “I am paying off your debt so my grandson has a roof over his head. But if Daniel decides to divorce you tomorrow, I will not spend a single penny on your legal defense. You will learn to be a decent human being, or you will end up completely alone.”

Vanessa left her father’s house in tears, but for the first time in her life, no one was running after her to comfort her.

She drove home to their split-level house. Daniel was at work. Liam was at school. The house was empty and quiet.

She walked into the dining room—the very room where she had handed out cake two months ago. She remembered the looks on everyone’s faces when she said those words to Eleanor. She had thought she was being witty, powerful, and dominant. But now she realized how pathetic she had looked.

She walked into her bedroom and opened her closet. Half of her designer clothes were gone, sold to pay bills. Her expensive jewelry was gone. The illusion of perfection was shattered.

That evening, when Daniel came home from his second job at 9:00 PM, pale and exhausted, Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen table.

“Daniel,” she said quietly.

Daniel set his briefcase down, barely looking at her. “I’m tired, Vanessa. I have to wake up at five tomorrow.”

“We need to go see your mother,” Vanessa said, her voice lacking its usual sharp bite.

Daniel paused, looking at her with suspicion. “Why? So you can insult her again?”

May you like

“No,” Vanessa said, tears filling her eyes—real tears, not the dramatic performance she usually put on. “Because my father was right. I am turning into a horrible person. And if I don’t fix this, I’m going to lose you and my family.”

Daniel stared at her, seeing a crack in Vanessa’s armor for the very first time.
