Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary We Built

Six years later, the sun was setting over the Gulf of Mexico, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and deep purple.

We were gathered on the back deck of our coastal cottage, celebrating Sofia’s eighteenth birthday.

The deck was strung with fairy lights that twinkled against the darkening sky, and the air was filled with the scent of grilled seafood and chocolate cake.

Clara was there, laughing as she poured sparkling cider into glasses. Several of Sofia’s closest friends from high school were gathered around the outdoor table, their laughter bright and infectious.

And Sofia sat in the center of it all, radiant, happy, and completely at peace.

She had just received her acceptance letter to the University of Texas, where she planned to study psychology, with the goal of becoming a child advocate and therapist, just like Dr. Sarah.

I stood by the wooden railing of the deck, looking out at the ocean, a glass of cider in my hand.

The waves rolled in, gentle and rhythmic, a constant reminder of the steady, peaceful life we had built. I thought back to the woman I had been thirteen years ago—tired, desperate, working myself to the bone, desperately wanting to believe in a false savior.

I had been so vulnerable. But through that vulnerability, I had found a strength I never knew I possessed.

I felt a hand slip into mine.

I turned to see Sofia standing beside me. She looked beautiful in her simple white sundress, her curly hair blowing gently in the sea breeze.

"What are you thinking about, Mommy?" she asked softly.

"Just... how far we've come," I said, squeezing her hand. "And how proud I am of you. You are going to change the world, Sofia."

"I learned from the best," she said, leaning her head against my shoulder.

We stood there in silence for a moment, watching the last sliver of the sun disappear beneath the horizon, leaving behind a sky filled with a million brilliant stars.

The silence between us now was not the heavy, suffocating silence of the past.

May you like

It was a beautiful, peaceful silence. It was the silence of two souls who had fought through the darkest of nights and emerged, victorious, into the light of a new day.

We had built a sanctuary, not just of wood and stone, but of love, truth, and unbreakable trust. And within that sanctuary, we were finally, completely, and happily safe.
