Chapter 9 - The Science of Happiness

As the warm summer months rolled in, our lives settled into a rhythm of absolute peace and contentment.
I received a promotion at work, giving me more financial stability and flexibility to spend quality time with Mia. We took weekend camping trips, roasting marshmallows over open campfires, hiking through state parks, and collecting smooth river stones.
Clare had secured a wonderful new job in graphic design and had completely rebuilt her life independently. She attended every single one of Mia’s school plays, parent-teacher conferences, and soccer games, sitting proudly alongside me in the bleachers. The bitter custody war that had nearly destroyed our family felt like a lifetime ago, completely overwritten by healing, maturity, and unconditional love for our daughter.
One evening in late July, as we sat on the balcony of our apartment watching the sun dip below the city skyline, painting the clouds in shades of gold and violet, Mia leaned her head against my shoulder.
“Daddy?” she whispered softly.
“I’m right here, sweetie.”
“I’m really glad we went to the park that day,” she said thoughtfully.

I looked down at her, wrapping my arm securely around her shoulders, feeling the steady, healthy rhythm of her heartbeat.
“So am I, sweetheart,” I murmured, kissing the top of her head. “So am I.”
