Chapter 6 - The Return to the House

Uncle Dave froze, his finger hovering over the screen of his phone. He raised a hand, signaling us to absolute silence.

The footsteps overhead stopped right above the basement door—right where the broken padlock and the splintered frame hung open.

My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird. Eric scrambled up from the floor, his eyes wide with stark terror, mouthing words without making a sound.

“She came back,” he mouthed.

A shadow fell across the open top of the basement stairs.

“Eric?” Vanessa’s voice drifted down, sounding disturbingly sweet, entirely devoid of the frantic panic she had displayed when she fled the barbecue just an hour ago. “I know you’re down there. I forgot my car keys on the kitchen island, but then I noticed the front door was unlocked.”

No one answered. We stood frozen in the dim fluorescent light of the cellar, barely daring to breathe.

“You shouldn’t have broken the chain, Eric,” Vanessa continued, her footsteps taking a slow, measured step down the top of the wooden stairs. The wood creaked ominously. “I told you those boxes were private. They represent my past. Everyone has a past, don't they?”

Uncle Dave stepped in front of me and Eric, his broad shoulders blocking the stairway view. He reached down quietly, keeping his grip tight on the heavy steel crowbar.

“Vanessa, stop right there,” Dave called out, his voice echoing authoritatively up the stairwell. “The police are already on their way. We found the files. We know about Maya.”

The footsteps paused. For a long, agonizing second, there was total silence from the top of the stairs.

Then, Vanessa laughed. It wasn't the sharp, defensive laugh from the backyard. It was a low, chilling sound that sent a shiver straight down my spine.

“The police?” she asked softly. “Uncle Dave, bless your heart. Do you really think local cops understand what’s happening here? They see a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and a bitter sister-in-law. They don't see the big picture.”

“They’ll see a room full of kidnapped children's records and kidnapping logs,” I retorted, stepping out from behind Dave so my voice carried straight up the steps. “You’re done, Vanessa. The game is over.”

A shadow shifted at the bend of the stairs. Vanessa leaned slightly into the light, her face calm, almost serene, though her eyes were unsettlingly wide. She wasn't holding a weapon—at least, not one we could see—but her hands were tucked deep inside the pockets of her oversized coat.

“You think I planned all of this on a whim?” Vanessa tilted her head, her voice dropping to an intimate whisper. “I spent two years integrating myself into this family. I studied Eric’s weaknesses. I knew he was desperate for a mother figure for Lucy, and I knew you, Claire, were the only obstacle because you pay too much attention.”

She took another step down, the beam of Dave’s flashlight catching the cold smile on her lips.

“And you know what the best part is?” Vanessa whispered, her voice tightening with manic triumph. “While you’re down here playing detective in my storage unit... where do you think little Lucy is right now?”

Eric let out a strangled cry, his knees buckling beneath him.
