Chapter 1 - THE MEDICINE MY BABY WASN’T GETTING

My baby was burning with a 104°F fever when the doctor looked at me and said:

“First-time mothers sometimes worry more than necessary.”

My mother-in-law smiled.

My husband immediately agreed.

“She’s always been too anxious.”

I said nothing.

For months, every time I worried about our baby, they told me I was overreacting.

Then my seven-year-old daughter stepped forward holding her teddy bear.

“Doctor Sterling?”

The doctor looked at her.

“Do you want me to tell you what Grandma gave the baby instead of his medicine?”

The room went silent.

My daughter reached beneath the teddy bear’s overalls and pulled out an amber prescription bottle.

“I found the real medicine in the trash because it had the baby’s name on it.”

The doctor examined the bottle.

It was still almost full.

That made no sense.

My husband and mother-in-law had insisted our baby had been taking it for days.

Then my daughter said:

“Grandma poured this medicine down the sink. After that, she filled the baby’s syringe with the purple medicine from beside her bed.”

My mother-in-law immediately interrupted.

“She’s seven. She probably misunderstood.”

My daughter shook her head.

“I didn’t.”

Doctor Sterling pressed the call button.

A nurse entered.

He handed her the bottle.

“Seal this. I want everything this child has received documented.”

That was the moment my husband stopped looking annoyed.

He started looking nervous.
