Part 2: The Secret Ethan Buried

The silence in the hospital room became unbearable.
I looked from Lily to Ethan and back again.
My husband stood frozen beside the bed, his face pale enough to match the hospital walls.
"Ethan," I whispered. "Tell me she's wrong."
He swallowed hard.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he slowly sank into the chair beside my bed.
"I never wanted this to happen."
My stomach dropped.
"Oh my God."
Tears filled my eyes.
"You cheated on me?"
"No!" Ethan shouted immediately.
The force of his answer startled everyone.
Even Lily stopped crying.
Ethan buried his face in his hands.
Then he looked up.
"The woman Lily saw wasn't my girlfriend."
"Then who was she?"
His eyes moved toward Noah.
Then back to me.
"My sister."
I blinked.
"What?"
"My sister, Rachel."
The name hit me like a bolt of lightning.
Rachel had disappeared years earlier after a bitter family argument. Ethan rarely spoke about her.
"Lily overheard part of a conversation," he said. "But she didn't hear everything."
I stared at him.
"Then explain."
Ethan took a shaky breath.
"Three years ago, Rachel got pregnant."
He paused.
"The father left before the baby was born."
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with Noah?"
"Everything."
My heart pounded.
Ethan continued.
"The baby was born with a severe heart condition. Rachel couldn't afford treatment. She was terrified."
Tears rolled down his cheeks.
"She begged me for help."
The room was silent.
"So I helped her financially," he continued. "For almost a year."
I squeezed Noah closer.
"But the baby died."
A quiet gasp escaped my lips.
Ethan nodded.
"Rachel blamed herself. She spiraled into depression."
His voice cracked.
"The argument Lily heard happened six months ago. Rachel was pregnant again and scared. She kept saying she couldn't do it. She didn't want another baby because she was afraid she'd lose this one too."
The pieces slowly started fitting together.
"But why did Lily think—"
"Because she only heard part of it."
Ethan looked at our daughter.
"You heard Rachel say she didn't want the baby anymore."
Lily nodded slowly.
"I thought she meant Noah."
"No, sweetheart."
Tears filled Ethan's eyes again.
"There was never another woman."
I wanted to believe him.
But one question remained.
I looked down at Noah.
"The vasectomy."
Ethan nodded.
"I know."
The room grew quiet once more.
