Chapter 10 - A House Built on Love

Five months after that snowy Christmas night, our household felt completely different.
The heavy, suffocating ghosts of the past had vanished, replaced by the chaotic, beautiful, loud reality of a family where love wasn't a transaction—it was a given.
On a warm Saturday morning in May, we hosted a backyard barbecue.
There were no formal dress codes, no secret rules, and no walking on eggshells. The sprinkler was hissing across the green lawn, spraying cool water into the air while Ella and Hannah raced through the mist, screaming and laughing at the top of their lungs.
Neighbors walked by and waved. Friends from school dropped by with lawn chairs and potato salad.
Eric stood beside the charcoal grill, flipping burgers with a relaxed smile on his face, wearing an absurd apron that Hannah had bought him for his birthday that read: World’s Okayest Grill Master.
I walked up behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist and pressing my face against his back.
He turned around, wrapping one flour-dusted arm around me, and kissed the top of my head.
“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Vance,” he smiled, looking down at me with those warm, steady eyes.
I looked out across the sunlit yard, watching our daughters chase each other through the spray of the sprinkler, completely free, completely protected, and completely loved.
“Just thinking,” I smiled back, resting my head against his chest. “That this is what a home is supposed to feel like.”
May you like
Eric tightened his embrace, looking out at the bright, open horizon ahead of us.
“Yeah,” he whispered, his voice full of quiet, unshakeable peace. “It took us a while to get here, but we finally built it.”
