PART 4 — Healing More Than a Scar

Doctors assured us the device had never harmed Sophie's brain.

It could be safely removed during a short outpatient procedure.

Still, the hardest part wasn't the surgery.

It was helping an eight-year-old understand that adults can make terrible decisions—and that none of them were her fault.

Before the procedure, Sophie squeezed my hand.

"Are you mad at Grandma?"

I chose my words carefully.

"I'm sad about what she did."

"Will you still love me after they take it out?"

I kissed her forehead.

"My love was never inside that chip."

"It has always been right here."

I pressed my hand against my heart.

The surgery lasted less than an hour.

When Dr. Hayes walked out smiling, my knees nearly gave way with relief.

"It went perfectly."

He placed a tiny sealed container in my hands.

Inside rested an object no larger than a grain of rice.

So much fear...

Hidden inside something so small.

Weeks later, Sophie began meeting with a child therapist.

Slowly, she learned that keeping dangerous secrets was different from keeping happy surprises.

She laughed more.

She slept through the night again.

And little by little...

The frightened whisper of "Don't look..." disappeared from our home.
