Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

Three months later, the silver Honda was long gone, replaced by a reliable SUV parked in the driveway of our new home—a bright, sunlit house three towns over, perched high on a flat, stable hill with no woods, no old pump houses, and no hidden secrets buried beneath the soil.
It was a Tuesday afternoon.
The front window flashed with the vibrant, noisy colors of a Saturday morning cartoon marathon that Maisy and Theo were watching from the living room rug. The air smelled of cinnamon toast and fabric softener. There was no creek nearby, no ominous hum in the floorboards, and no shadows lurking behind the fence line.
I sat at the kitchen island, reviewing my nursing shift schedule, listening to the comfortable, ordinary sound of my children arguing over who got the last blue gummy bear.
The front door opened, and my mother walked in, carrying a bag of fresh groceries from the farmers market, while my father followed behind her, pushing Theo in a bright red stroller. They came over every Tuesday now, spending hours playing blocks on the living room floor, making up for every lost minute of that terrifying afternoon.
Maisy bounded into the kitchen, her blonde hair bouncing, holding a drawing she had made with a box of brand-new crayons.
"Mom, look! I drew us at the new park!" she announced proudly, thrusting the paper toward me.
I looked down at the drawing. It was full of bright yellows, sky blues, and green grass. No dark trees. No muddy slopes. Just a family standing together under a smiling sun.
I smiled, cupping her face and pressing a kiss to her forehead—the exact same forehead that had pressed against mine when she whispered her fierce, unforgettable promise.
"It's beautiful, sweetie," I whispered, pulling her close. "The safest place in the world."

Maisy grinned, patting my hand before turning back toward the living room where her baby brother was laughing at a cartoon dog.
Outside, the wind blew gently through the open window, carrying nothing more than the scent of blooming autumn flowers and the bright, unbreakable promise of tomorrow.
