Chapter 6 - The Midnight Audit

The drive up to the lake house took two hours through winding mountain roads blanketed in thick pine forests. By the time our small caravan of unmarked vehicles pulled off the paved highway and onto the gravel track leading to our private waterfront property, night had fully fallen.

The lake house sat in absolute darkness, save for a warm, amber glow emanating from the living room floor-to-ceiling windows.

Marcus parked his sleek black sedan fifty yards down the drive, cutting the headlights. The two private investigators flanked our vehicle, their expressions grim and professional.

“According to our thermal sweep,” the lead investigator whispered, leaning over the center console, “there are two heat signatures inside the cabin. Both are currently in the primary living area.”

I took a deep breath, feeling the cool night air fill my lungs. I opened the car door and stepped out onto the crushed gravel, my heels crunching softly against the stones.

“Let’s pay my husband a visit,” I said.

We walked single-file up the wooden deck stairs. The sliding glass patio door was unlocked—Julian always was arrogant about security up here in the middle of nowhere, believing himself entirely invisible to the world.

Marcus stood to my left, holding the heavy manila envelope containing the emergency injunctions, freezing orders, and formal divorce filings.

I reached out, pushed the heavy glass door open, and stepped silently into the living room.

The scene inside was straight out of a tragicomedy. Julian and Chloe were sitting on the plush leather sofa, sharing a bottle of expensive vintage cabernet by the crackling stone fireplace. Julian was laughing softly, his arm draped casually around Chloe’s shoulders, whispering something in her ear while she wore my sapphire necklace resting openly against her collarbone.

For three seconds, time froze.

Then, Julian turned his head toward the sound of footsteps.

His warm, relaxed smile vanished instantly, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated horror as his eyes locked onto mine. The glass of wine slipped from his fingers, shattering violently against the hardwood floor, spilling dark red liquid like a spreading stain across the rug.

“E-Elena?” Julian stammered, scrambling backward off the sofa, nearly tripping over the coffee table. “What... what are you doing here? I thought you were at the hospital!”

Chloe froze, her face draining of all color as she instinctively clutched the sapphire pendant with trembling fingers, shrinking back into the corner of the sofa.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I simply walked forward into the warm light of the living room, my gaze locked onto my husband with a terrifying, absolute calmness.

“You always did terrible financial audits, Julian,” I said softly, my voice cutting cleanly through the roaring crackle of the fireplace. “You missed the most important asset of all: the truth.”

Before Julian could find his voice, Marcus Vance stepped through the sliding door behind me, holding the thick stack of legal documents out like a gleaming executioner's blade.

“Good evening, Mr. Sterling,” Marcus said, his voice dripping with cool professional satisfaction. “My name is Marcus Vance. I represent your wife. You’ve just been served.”
