Chapter 6 - The Hidden Vault

The news felt like a physical blow. The system meant to protect us was compromised, and Scott's influence extended far beyond the walls of our former home.

"Is he still in custody?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"He's in federal holding, but his legal team is filing emergency motions," Miller warned. "They’re claiming the search of your home was conducted without proper probable cause because the initial tip came from a spouse without physical evidence present at the moment of entry. If the judge grants their motion to suppress, the evidence from the bathroom crawlspace could be thrown out."

"You can't let him out," I begged, tears burning my eyes. "He ruined our daughter's life! He terrified her!"

"I need you to search your memory, Clara," Miller said, her voice dropping lower. "Scott was meticulous, but people like him always keep a backup—a primary physical ledger or hard drive hidden off-site in case their home base is compromised. Did he have a workshop? A storage unit? Somewhere he went regularly where you never followed?"

I closed my eyes, forcing myself to look back through seven years of marriage, searching for the small details I had previously ignored or written off as harmless hobbies.

The old boat shed.

My grandfather had left me a dilapidated wooden boathouse down near Blackwood Lake, three miles from our house. Scott had offered to repair the roof four years ago and had kept the key on his personal ring ever since, claiming he used it to store his woodworking tools. I had stepped foot in that shed exactly once, repelled by the smell of stagnant water and rust.

"The lake shed," I said into the phone. "He kept a padlock on the boathouse near Blackwood Creek."

"Stay where you are," Miller ordered. "I'm calling federal agents. We'll secure the site."

"No," I said, a sudden realization washing over me. "If his associates know the police are closing in, they'll clear it out before you get a warrant for an off-site property. I know where the spare key is."

"Clara, do not go there alone! It's dangerous!"

I hung up the phone. I looked toward the bedroom where my daughter lay sleeping under the warm nightlight. For months, I had been passive, confused, and frightened. I had let Scott manipulate my reality and terrorize our child right under my roof.

No more.
