Chapter 6 - Cutting the Cord

“For thirty years, Madeline, we’ve all tolerated your arrogant rules, your biting tongue, and your miserable attempts to control every single life in this family,” Uncle Richard roared, his voice shaking the patio tiles. “We stayed silent when you drove Arthur away into his work. We stayed silent when you treated every in-law like an unwanted servant. But trying to destroy an innocent four-year-old child with forged lies and malicious investigator reports? That crosses a line you can never come back from.”
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the surrounding relatives. Several aunts who had previously stayed neutral now nodded firmly, glaring at Madeline with unconcealed contempt.
Madeline’s composure finally began to crack. The unshakeable mask of aristocratic dignity slipped, revealing a desperate, cornered woman beneath. “You are all fools!” she hissed, her voice rising in frantic pitch. “That child is a nobody! That woman is a leech! If you turn your backs on me, you turn your backs on everything the Conway name stands for!”
“The Conway name doesn't mean a damn thing if there’s no honor, no decency, and no heart behind it,” Brandon said coldly, dropping his hands from his face.
When Brandon looked up, his eyes were no longer swimming with confusion or despair. They were burning with a fierce, absolute resolve. He walked past the scattered shards of blackberry cobbler, bypassed his mother entirely, and walked straight over to Aunt Beatrice, where little Luke was still resting his head against her shoulder.
Gently, tenderly, Brandon knelt down on one knee in front of our son.
“Hey there, buddy,” Brandon whispered, his voice cracking with emotion as he stroked Luke’s soft brown hair. “How’s my big boy feeling?”
Luke opened his heavy blue eyes, looking up at his father with a heartbreaking mixture of fear and innocence. “Daddy… did I do something bad? Why did Grandma break my cake?”
“You didn't do anything wrong, champion,” Brandon said, his voice thick with tears as he pressed a gentle kiss to Luke’s forehead. “You are the best, kindest little boy in the entire world. And I promise you… you never have to worry about that woman ever again. Because she is never, ever going to be part of our lives.”
Luke blinked, processing his father’s words with the simple logic of a four-year-old. “So… I don't have to call her Grandma anymore?”
“No, buddy,” Brandon smiled softly, wrapping his strong arms around our son and lifting him carefully into his embrace. “You never have to call her anything ever again.”
I walked over, kneeling beside them, and wrapped my arms around both my husband and my son. For a long, quiet moment, the three of us held onto each other, shutting out the rest of the world, the hostile relatives, the shattered ceramic, and the bitter matriarch standing a few feet away.
When Brandon stood up, holding Luke securely against his chest, he turned to face his mother one final time. The look in Brandon’s eyes wasn't anger anymore; it was complete, chilling indifference—the absolute death of filial obligation.
“Pack your things and leave this estate, Mother,” Brandon said, his voice level, quiet, and terrifyingly final. “Effective immediately, my lawyers will begin the process of dissolving all joint commercial holdings and family trusts. You will no longer have access to our lives, our home, or our son. If you ever attempt to contact us again, we will file a formal restraining order for harassment.”
Madeline stared at her son, her mouth opening slightly as the full, devastating reality of what she had done finally set in. She hadn't destroyed our marriage. She hadn't exposed a scandal. She had successfully alienated every single person who cared about her, leaving herself completely alone in her grand, empty estate.
“You… you’re cutting me off over an outsider?” Madeline whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief and sudden, creeping terror.
May you like
“No, Mother,” Brandon replied without a single ounce of hesitation. “I’m cutting you off to save my family.”
Without another word, Brandon turned his back on her, holding Luke and me close as we walked together toward the front gates of the Conway estate, leaving Madeline standing alone among the ruins of her own bitter malice.
