Part 2: The Truth Hidden in the Shadows

My finger hovered over the pause button.
The video continued.
The stranger who stepped from the shadows wasn't someone from the daycare. He wore a baseball cap pulled low over his face and carried a small insulated lunch bag.
Mark glanced around the parking lot before handing Ava to him.
Not for long.
Just long enough for the man to kneel beside my daughter, unzip the lunch bag, and hand her something wrapped in colorful paper.
Candy.
Ava smiled.
She always smiled when someone offered candy.
Then Mark quickly took her hand again and walked her inside as if nothing had happened.
The entire exchange lasted less than twenty seconds.
But it destroyed everything I believed about my husband.
Miss Greenwood whispered through the phone, "Sarah... that man wasn't authorized to be anywhere near the children. I've worked here for eight years. I've never seen him before."
My hands shook so badly I nearly dropped the phone.
"Don't confront your husband," she warned. "I already copied the footage. Tomorrow morning I'm taking it to the police."
I slowly looked over at Mark.
He was sleeping peacefully beside me.
Or pretending to.
I quietly slipped out of bed, grabbed my car keys, and drove straight to my sister Emily's house.
By sunrise, two detectives were sitting across from me.
They watched the security footage several times.
One of them paused the frame where the stranger handed Ava the candy.
"Do you know what your daughter was allergic to?" he asked.
"Peanuts," I whispered. "Even tiny amounts."
The detective nodded grimly.
"We'll have the wrapper tested."
Three days later, the laboratory confirmed everyone's worst fear.
The candy contained concentrated peanut butter.
Enough to trigger a fatal reaction.
But another discovery shocked me even more.
The stranger's fingerprints matched a man named Derek Holden.
He wasn't random.
He worked for Mark.
For nearly six years.
Police obtained Derek's phone records.
Hundreds of calls.
Hundreds of text messages.
Every one of them with my husband.
Then came the financial records.
Two days before Ava died...
Mark had transferred Derek fifty thousand dollars.
When detectives arrested Derek, he tried to deny everything.
But after twelve hours of questioning, he broke.
"I never wanted the little girl to die," he sobbed.
"I was only supposed to scare Sarah."
The room fell silent.
One detective leaned forward.
"What do you mean?"
Derek buried his face in his hands.
"Mark said his wife would never leave him unless something unimaginable happened. He wanted her completely dependent on him."
I felt sick.
The detective frowned.
"That's not enough to explain murder."
Derek hesitated.
Then he whispered words that made my blood freeze.
"There was a two-million-dollar life insurance policy."
I couldn't breathe.
The policy had been opened only four months earlier.
With Mark listed as the sole beneficiary.
But Derek wasn't finished.
"He also forged documents transferring Sarah's family inheritance into a joint investment account. Once she was emotionally broken... he'd convince her to sell everything."
The man I had loved for eleven years...
Hadn't just stolen my daughter.
He had planned to steal my entire future.
But Mark had made one mistake.
