Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Tomorrow

The autumn sun dipped below the Portland skyline, casting a golden hue over the river and painting the clouds in brilliant shades of amber and rose.

High above the bustling downtown streets, inside the warm, sunlit living room of their penthouse apartment, Rachel and Lily stood together by the expansive glass window, watching the city lights flicker to life one by one.

On the dining table behind them sat a freshly baked apple pie, courtesy of Mrs. Harper, who was currently downstairs chatting with Megan about their upcoming weekend hiking trip. The apartment was filled with the soft hum of jazz music, the smell of cinnamon, and the easy, joyful laughter of a household at absolute peace.

Lily held a fresh sketchbook in her hands, her pencil moving swiftly across the blank paper, sketching out the design for her next major art project—a series depicting the changing seasons of the Pacific Northwest, starting with the bright, vibrant blossoms of spring.

Rachel wrapped her arms around her daughter from behind, resting her chin gently on Lily’s shoulder.

“What are you drawing now, sweetheart?” Rachel asked softly.

“A new beginning,” Lily answered without missing a beat, her pencil gliding gracefully across the page. “A house with wide-open doors, where nobody ever has to stand out in the rain again.”

Rachel smiled, her heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and profound peace. She pressed a tender kiss to the top of Lily’s head.

“Sounds like the best kind of home,” Rachel whispered.

Outside, the evening breeze swept gently through the trees of the city, carrying away the last lingering shadows of the past. The rain had washed the world clean, leaving behind a horizon as endless, bright, and beautiful as the future they had built together.
