Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Crossroads

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as Ryan’s truck approached our driveway. For a fraction of a second, I panicked, my foot hovering over the accelerator as if paralyzed. If he blocked the driveway, we would be trapped.
"Mommy, is that Daddy?" Lily whispered from the backseat, pressing herself flat against the leather upholstery.
"Don't look, honey," I said, putting the car into drive and steering sharply around his truck just as it pulled into the drive.
I caught a glimpse of Ryan through the windshield. His brow furrowed in confusion as he saw my car rushing past him into the night. He rolled down his window, shouting something I couldn't hear over the roar of my engine. I didn't look back. I slammed my foot down on the gas, accelerating down the suburban street until his truck disappeared in the rearview mirror.
Twenty minutes later, I pulled into the underground parking garage of David’s downtown office building. My hands were shaking so badly I could barely turn off the ignition.
"We're safe here, baby," I murmured, unbuckling Lily and lifting her into my arms.
David was waiting for us by the elevator banks, flanked by a tall man in a plain grey suit holding a leather folio.
"Sarah!" David strode forward, taking Lily gently from my arms while wrapping his other arm around my shoulders. "Are you okay? Did he follow you?"
"I passed him as I was leaving," I gasped, tears finally spilling over. "He saw us. He tried to flag me down."
The man in the grey suit stepped forward, flashing a gold badge. "Mrs. Miller? I’m Detective Miller. Your brother briefed me on the situation in the car. I'm so sorry you and your daughter are going through this."
"I have proof," I said, pulling the digital voice recorder out of my coat pocket and handing it to him. "It’s on here. He... he recorded himself."
Detective Miller took the device, examining it carefully before placing it inside an evidence bag. "This is more than enough to secure an emergency protective order and a warrant for his arrest. Mr. Miller has already arranged for a safe room upstairs where a child psychologist can speak with Lily in a comfortable environment."
"Will she have to talk about it?" I asked, looking down at my daughter, who was burying her face in David’s shoulder.
"Not right now," Detective Miller assured me gently. "Right now, our priority is her safety and well-being. But your statement, combined with this audio recording, gives us immediate grounds to pick him up."
While Lily was taken care of by a compassionate female specialist in a quiet, toy-filled consultation room upstairs, David and I sat in his private office with Detective Miller.
"We need to execute the arrest warrant tonight," Detective Miller said, placing his notebook on the desk. "If he realizes you've gone to the police, he might try to flee. Does he have any family out of state?"
"No," I said, shaking my head. "His parents passed away years ago. He told me he was an only child with no close relatives."
"Even better," David said grimly. "He has nowhere to run. Detective, how soon can you move in on the house?"
May you like
"My team is already en route," Miller said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "We’ll secure the premises, take him into custody, and conduct a thorough search of the property. Mrs. Miller, you and Lily should stay with David for the next few days. Do not return to that house until we've cleared it completely."
I nodded numbly, the adrenaline slowly draining from my system, leaving behind a profound, hollow exhaustion. The man I had trusted, the man I had allowed into my daughter’s life, was a monster. And I had invited him in.
