Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

Three weeks had passed since that horrific afternoon.
Sophie had fully recovered from her physical injuries, though she still had occasional nightmares about being locked in small, dark spaces. To help her heal, Daniel had completely renovated the estate, selling the black Mercedes immediately and transforming the driveway area into a vibrant garden filled with Sophie's favorite sunflowers.
Claudia’s trial had moved forward with unprecedented speed. Facing overwhelming digital and video evidence, as well as the testimony of top medical experts, her lawyer had advised her to plead guilty to attempted murder in exchange for removing the death penalty from consideration. She was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
On a warm Tuesday morning, Daniel called Elena into his study.
Elena entered timidly, wiping her hands on her apron. She still felt slightly self-conscious around Daniel, knowing how wealthy and powerful he was, despite how kindly he had treated her since the incident.
"You wanted to see me, Mr. Carter?" Elena asked softly.
"Please, sit down, Elena," Daniel said, standing up from his desk and gesturing to a comfortable leather armchair.
Elena sat down on the edge of the seat. "Is everything alright with Miss Sophie? Does she need her lunch prepared?"
"Sophie is fine, Elena. She's playing in the playroom," Daniel smiled warm. "I called you in here to discuss something very important. About your future in this house."
Elena’s heart sank slightly. A wave of panic rushed through her. Is he firing me? Does seeing me remind him too much of that terrible day?
"Mr. Carter..." Elena began, her voice trembling slightly. "If I have done something wrong, or if you prefer a new staff..."
"No, no! Elena, stop," Daniel interrupted quickly, stepping around his desk. "You haven't done anything wrong. Quite the opposite."
He picked up a thick legal folder from his desk and handed it to her. Elena opened it, but the complex legal jargon made her head spin.
"What is this?" she asked, looking up confused.
"For the past three weeks, my legal team has been working on a few things," Daniel explained. "First, I found out that your legal residency status in this country was being held up by bureaucratic paperwork and unfair fees from your previous agency."
Elena nodded sadly. "Yes, sir. My visa renewal was delayed. I was terrified of being deported back to my country where I have no family left."
"Well, you don't have to worry about that ever again," Daniel said with a proud smile. "I spoke directly with the State Department and immigration authorities. As of yesterday, you have been granted permanent citizenship in this country."
Elena stared at him, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Citizenship? Permanent?"
"Yes," Daniel said, handing her an official document stamped with a gold seal. "You are officially a permanent resident, and full citizenship will follow automatically. No one can ever deport you."
Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes. She clutched the document to her chest, unable to speak. "Mr. Carter... I... I don't know what to say... This is a miracle..."
"That's only the first part," Daniel continued, leaning against the edge of his desk. "Elena, you saved my daughter's life. You bled for her. You stood up to a dangerous woman when no one else did. You protected Sophie when I was blind to the danger."
He opened a second folder. "I have established a special annuity fund in your name. Five million dollars has been placed into an account that will pay you a substantial monthly income for the rest of your life. You never have to work another day as a domestic maid if you don't want to. You are financially independent."
Elena stood up so fast her chair almost tipped over. She shook her head frantically, trying to hand the folder back. "No! No, Mr. Carter! I cannot accept this! I did not help Miss Sophie for money! I love that little girl! I did what any human being with a heart would do!"
"I know you didn't do it for money, Elena," Daniel said gently, pushing the folder softly back into her hands. "That is precisely why you deserve it. Money cannot repay what you gave back to me—my daughter's life. But it can give you the security, respect, and freedom you have earned ten times over."
Elena covered her face with her hands and wept tears of profound gratitude. For years she had worked sixteen-hour days, sending money back home, enduring harsh treatment from wealthy employers, constantly living in fear of the future. Now, in a single moment, her life had been transformed.
"However," Daniel added with a light chuckle, "I do have one selfish request."
Elena wiped her eyes with a handkerchief and looked up. "Anything, sir."
"Sophie adores you," Daniel said, his eyes filled with sincere emotion. "She doesn't see you as a maid. She sees you as her protector, her confidante... her family. And to be honest, neither do I. I don't want you to be our maid anymore, Elena. I want to hire you as Sophie’s official legal guardian and head of household management. I want you to help me raise her. You will have your own private suite in the mansion, a personal budget, full authority over the estate staff, and most importantly, you will be a permanent part of our family."
Before Elena could answer, the study door creaked open. Little Sophie peeked inside, holding a stuffed teddy bear.
"Elena?" Sophie called out, running into the room and wrapping her small arms around Elena’s legs. "Are you going to read me the story about the princess now?"
May you like
Elena dropped to her knees, pulling Sophie into a warm, tight embrace, burying her face in the child's soft curls.
"Yes, my sweet princess," Elena whispered, looking up at Daniel with a tearful, radiant smile. "I'm going to read you all the stories you want. I'm never leaving."
