Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Legacy

The pursuit ended sooner than anyone expected, but not without drama. Patricia had tried to flee toward the state line, driving recklessly in an attempt to evade the state troopers trailing her. But she wasn't a criminal mastermind—she was a desperate, cruel opportunist losing her grip on reality.
Her car blew a tire near an exit ramp, spinning out into a grassy ditch. She was dragged out of the driver's seat in handcuffs, screaming insults at the officers, claiming she was a victim of domestic abuse and that I was framing her.
When Detective Vance brought me the news at the station, I felt no triumph—only a cold, lingering exhaustion.
"She’s in custody," Vance informed me. "She’s refusing to talk without an attorney, but with the evidence from the lockbox, the diary, the poison vial, and the physical state of your children, she isn't getting out on bail."
I returned home just as the morning sun was beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and pink. The house felt different—still shadowed by the horrific events of the night, but no longer suffocated by Patricia’s presence.
My mother was sitting on the couch in the living room, holding a mug of tea, her eyes red from crying.
"How are they?" I asked softly, dropping my keys on the counter.
"They woke up an hour ago," she whispered, standing up to hug me tightly. "I made them pancakes. Mark... Ava told me things. Horrible things. Patricia wouldn't let them leave the laundry room when you were gone. She told them that if they made a sound, she would make them disappear just like their mother."
A fresh tear burned down my cheek. "I failed them, Mom."
"No," my mother said fiercely, grabbing my shoulders. "You came home. You stopped her. You're going to fix this, Mark. You have to be strong for them now."
I walked upstairs into the master bedroom. Ava and Lucas were sitting on the floor, playing quietly with a set of wooden blocks. When the door creaked open, both of them flinched violently, pulling away.
The sight broke my heart all over again.
"It's just me, sweethearts," I said softly, sitting down on the floor a few feet away from them to give them space. "It's just Daddy."
Ava looked at me tentatively, her small hands trembling over a blue block. "Is... is she coming back?"
"No, Ava," I said, looking her straight in the eyes with absolute conviction. "She is never, ever coming back. The police took her away, and she will never hurt you or Lucas again. I promise you on my life."
Lucas crawled over slowly, reaching out his tiny hand to touch my knee. I picked him up gently, cradling him against my chest, and reached out my other arm for Ava. She hesitated for a second before throwing herself into my lap, burying her head against my neck.
We sat there on the floor for a long time, holding each other in the quiet morning light.
Over the next few days, the reality of what had happened began to unfold in full detail. Detectives searched Patricia’s past and uncovered a trail of deceit. She had been drowning in massive gambling debts and personal loans before reconnecting with Emily. She had systematically targeted our family, realizing that Emily’s death and my subsequent grief would grant her access to our home, our wealth, and my life insurance policies.

Her plan had been simple: eliminate Emily, marry me, secure the finances, starve and abuse the children to create a narrative of "unmanageable, troubled kids," and eventually stage another tragic "accident" for me.
She had almost succeeded. If I hadn't come home early that Thursday night—if my flight hadn't been rescheduled—I might have lost my children forever.
