Chapter 10 - A FOREVER HOME

The rain tapped softly against the tall arched windows of the Morrison estate, a gentle, soothing rhythm rather than the violent storm of years past.

Inside the warm, amber-lit library, the fire crackled in the hearth, casting a golden glow over leather-bound books and comfortable armchairs.

Tommy, now a energetic toddler with a head of unruly curls, was fast asleep on a plush rug near the hearth, clutching a stuffed golden retriever in his arms.

Russell sat in his favorite armchair, holding a thick fairy tale book open across his knees.

Sylvie curled up beside him, resting her head comfortably against his shoulder, her eyes heavy with sleep as she listened to the familiar cadence of his voice reading the final pages of the story.

"...And they lived safely, surrounded by warmth and love, knowing that no matter how hard the storm outside might blow, the light inside would never go out," Russell read softly.

He closed the book and looked down.

Sylvie had drifted off to sleep, her breathing deep, steady, and entirely at peace.

Russell carefully lifted her into his arms, carrying her down the wide carpeted hallway to her bedroom, tucking the heavy quilt securely under her chin. He pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, whispering, "Good night, my little hero."

He walked out into the hallway, pausing for a moment beneath the soft light of the wall sconces. He placed a hand over his chest, feeling the steady, strong, rhythmic beat of his heart—a heart that had been broken, abandoned, and left for dead, only to be healed by the tiny, fearless hands of a barefoot girl in the rain.

He smiled into the quiet dark, knowing that some stories don't just end happily—they begin all over again, every single day.
