Chapter 7 - The Motion for Release
The state’s case against Noah Mercer was collapsing like a house of cards.
Over the next month, federal investigators intervened, seizing the entire digital archive of the Tulsa Police Department's 2016 homicide unit. They discovered three separate internal emails between Vance and the prosecution’s star jailhouse witness—the man who had testified that Noah confessed while in custody.
The emails showed that Vance had arranged for the witness’s grand larceny charges to be quietly dismissed in exchange for his false testimony against Noah.
On a freezing morning in early January, Renee filed a Motion for Order of Exoneration and Immediate Release.
The Attorney General’s office, facing severe public outrage and federal scrutiny, filed a formal response stating they would not oppose the motion and were dropping all charges against Noah Mercer.
The news broke at noon.
I was at the motel packing our things when Renee called.
"Lauren, get to the courthouse," she said, her voice crackling with pure joy. "The judge is signing the release order right now. Noah is walking out today."
My breath caught in my throat. "Today?"
"Today."
I dropped my bags, grabbed Mia, and ran to the car.
When we arrived at the county courthouse, a massive crowd had gathered on the steps—journalists, supporters, civil rights advocates, and curious onlookers. Banners reading JUSTICE FOR NOAH and TRUTH PREVAILS floated above the crowd.
Inside the courtroom, Judge Croft sat at the bench, looking down at Noah, who was dressed in a dark grey suit provided by Renee’s legal defense team.
"Mr. Mercer," Judge Croft said, his voice echoing in the silent room. "This court has reviewed the complete evidentiary record. It is abundantly clear that a grave, tragic injustice was committed against you by individuals sworn to uphold the law. No apology from this bench can restore the eight years stolen from your life, but today, this court restores your freedom."

The courtroom erupted into cheers. Noah closed his eyes, leaning heavily against the defense table as Renee wrapped her arms around him in a tight embrace.
