Part 2: The Secret Hidden Beneath the Silk

Part 2: The Secret Hidden Beneath the Silk

Clara stared at the tiny drops of blood forming on her palm.

For a moment, she couldn't breathe.

The pillow lay exactly where it had been moments before, smooth and elegant beneath its expensive silk cover. Nothing about it suggested danger. It looked like something chosen from the finest luxury catalog—a decorative piece that belonged in a mansion owned by one of the city's wealthiest businessmen.

But appearances had lied.

Very carefully, Clara reached toward the bedside table and took a pair of leather gardening gloves she had noticed earlier while helping organize one of the storage closets. They weren't thick enough to guarantee protection, but they were better than bare skin.

"Stay where you are, sweetheart," she whispered.

Leo nodded from the corner of the bed, hugging his knees tightly.

His small body trembled.

"I won't touch it," he promised.

Clara slipped on the gloves and slowly lifted the pillow.

It felt surprisingly heavy.

Not by much—but enough that her instincts immediately sharpened.

Luxury pillows were usually filled with feathers or memory foam.

This one felt...solid.

She carried it beneath the flashlight's beam and turned it over.

The stitching along one side looked different from the rest.

The silk was flawless, yet one seam had clearly been opened and sewn shut again by hand.

Not by the factory.

By someone inside the house.

Her heartbeat quickened.

Taking a tiny pair of sewing scissors from the emergency kit she always carried, Clara carefully snipped one thread.

Then another.

She opened only a few inches of the seam.

The flashlight revealed white stuffing.

Nothing unusual.

She reached in cautiously.

Instead of soft feathers, her fingers touched something rough.

Metal.

Clara slowly pulled the object free.

A rectangular sheet of thin steel no larger than a notebook emerged from the stuffing.

Dozens...

No.

Hundreds...

Of razor-sharp sewing needles had been glued upright across its surface.

Each needle pointed toward where a child's head would rest.

Some were stained with tiny dark spots.

Old blood.

Clara felt her stomach twist.

"My God..."

Behind her, Leo buried his face against the blanket.

"I told Daddy," he whispered between sobs.

"I told him the bed bites."

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"No, sweetheart."

She knelt beside him.

"You told the truth."

She gently hugged the little boy, careful not to let him see the horror still hidden inside the pillow.

For six weeks...

Every night...

Someone had forced him to sleep with his head resting on a board filled with needles.

No wonder his ears were covered in mysterious marks.

No wonder his cheeks were always swollen.

No wonder he screamed.

He hadn't been imagining anything.

He had been tortured.

Clara immediately wrapped the metal plate inside a towel.

She wanted to wake James.

She wanted to storm downstairs and throw the evidence onto his desk.

But something stopped her.

If someone inside the mansion had built this trap...

That person would destroy every piece of evidence if they realized they had been discovered.

Instead, Clara removed the dangerous plate completely.

She replaced it with ordinary stuffing from another pillow in the linen closet.

For the first time in weeks, Leo rested his head against the repaired pillow.

His body froze.

He waited.

Nothing happened.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

His shoulders relaxed.

"It..."

His tiny voice trembled.

"It doesn't hurt."

"No."

Clara smiled through tears.

"It never will again."

Within minutes, the exhausted child fell asleep.

Not crying.

Not screaming.

Simply sleeping.

The peaceful expression on his face broke Clara's heart even more.

A six-year-old should never look surprised that sleeping didn't hurt.

The next morning, sunlight poured through the dining room windows.

James hurried through breakfast while answering phone calls from investors.

His company was negotiating the biggest merger in its history.

Three phones buzzed around him simultaneously.

Victoria poured coffee gracefully.

"You look exhausted," she said with practiced concern.

"I barely slept."

James rubbed his temples.

"Leo didn't scream."

She blinked.

"What?"

"He usually wakes the whole house."

Victoria forced a small smile.

"Maybe he's finally learning."

Before James could answer, Leo entered holding Clara's hand.

For the first time since she'd arrived at the mansion...

He wasn't hiding.

He wasn't clinging to walls.

He looked sleepy—but peaceful.

James frowned.

"You slept all night?"

Leo nodded.

"Yes."

"No nightmares?"

"No."

James looked genuinely confused.

Victoria's coffee cup nearly slipped from her hand.

Only Clara noticed.

The elegant woman recovered almost instantly.

"That's wonderful," Victoria said warmly.

"I told everyone children eventually grow out of these phases."

But her smile never reached her eyes.

Later that afternoon, Clara drove Leo to school.

Instead of heading directly home, she made a small detour.

She stopped outside a modest medical clinic owned by an old friend.

Dr. Evelyn Brooks had spent forty years treating children.

She trusted Clara completely.

"What happened?"

Clara placed the wrapped towel on the examination table.

"Before I explain..."

She unfolded it.

Dr. Brooks stared.

Then gasped.

"Who would..."

She couldn't finish.

Clara quietly told the entire story.

The doctor examined the metal plate carefully without touching the needles.

"There are traces of dried blood."

She looked at Clara.

"This wasn't made yesterday."

"No."

"It has been used repeatedly."

Dr. Brooks photographed every angle.

Then she examined Leo.

Tiny puncture scars surrounded both ears.

Almost invisible.

Easy to dismiss.

Unless someone knew exactly where to look.

"There are over eighty healing wounds."

James had never noticed.

Neither had the teachers.

The marks hid beneath Leo's hairline.

Exactly where the needles had struck night after night.

Dr. Brooks carefully documented every injury.

"You need to contact the police."

"I will."

"But first..."

Clara looked toward the window.

"I need to know who did this."

That evening, Clara returned to the mansion as though nothing had happened.

She watched.

She listened.

She noticed every glance.

Every conversation.

Every expression.

The staff adored Leo.

The cook secretly baked dinosaur-shaped cookies for him.

The gardener let him help water the roses.

The chauffeur carried him on his shoulders.

Only one person consistently avoided genuine affection toward the boy.

Victoria.

Whenever James entered the room, Victoria became the perfect future stepmother.

She smiled.

She complimented Leo.

She asked about school.

The second James left...

Everything changed.

Her smile disappeared.

Her voice became cold.

"Don't leave your toys there."

"Stop making noise."

"Your father has important work."

Every sentence sounded polite.

Every word carried quiet contempt.

Clara had seen people like her before.

People who never shouted because whispers left fewer witnesses.

Around nine that night, James left for an emergency business dinner.

"I'll be back late."

Victoria kissed him.

"Don't worry."

"I'll make sure Leo gets to bed."

Clara's heart pounded.

She volunteered immediately.

"I can help with bedtime."

Victoria smiled.

"No need."

"I insist."

Their eyes met.

For the first time...

The two women silently challenged each other.

Finally, Victoria laughed.

"As you wish."

Leo brushed his teeth.

Changed into dinosaur pajamas.

Climbed onto the bed.

He looked nervous.

Then he remembered.

The pillow was safe.

He smiled.

Clara kissed his forehead.

"Goodnight."

Within minutes...

He slept peacefully again.

No screaming.

No crying.

No panic.

Clara remained in the hallway pretending to fold laundry.

About twenty minutes later...

Victoria quietly opened Leo's bedroom door.

She glanced behind her.

Believing no one watched, she walked directly toward the bed.

Clara's pulse raced.

Victoria slipped one hand inside her robe pocket.

She removed...

Another object wrapped in silk.

She reached toward the pillow.

Clara stepped into the doorway.

"What are you doing?"

Victoria jumped violently.

The bundle nearly fell from her hand.

"Oh!"

She laughed nervously.

"You startled me."

"I just wanted to fluff his pillow."

"At midnight?"

Victoria hesitated.

Then smiled again.

"Children sleep better with proper support."

Clara's gaze lowered toward the object hidden behind Victoria's back.

"What are you holding?"

For the first time since arriving at the mansion...

Victoria's mask cracked.

Only for a second.

But Clara saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Before either woman could speak again, headlights swept across the bedroom curtains.

James had returned home earlier than expected.

Victoria instantly slipped the wrapped object back into her pocket.

Her warm smile returned as though nothing had happened.

"James is home," she said sweetly.

"We should let the poor child sleep."

She walked calmly out of the room.

But Clara noticed one detail.

Victoria's hands...

Were shaking.

And deep inside her robe pocket...

Something metallic clicked softly against itself.

Clara knew then that the nightmare was far from over.

Someone had built the first deadly pillow.

May you like

And unless she stopped them...

They were preparing to build another.
