Part 2: The Voice on the Phone

Daniel stared at the kitchen wall as the voice continued.

“Mr. Mercer, I believe you may have something of mine.”

The man sounded calm.

Too calm.

Daniel looked across the table.

Lily had frozen.

The color drained from her face.

Her fingers tightened around the backpack.

Daniel already knew the answer before he asked.

“Is that your father?”

Lily's eyes filled with terror.

She slowly shook her head.

No.

Daniel turned away from her and spoke into the phone.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then the voice said, “My name isn't important. What is important is that the child in your house belongs to me.”

Daniel felt something cold settle in his chest.

Children did not belong to anyone.

“I'm afraid you've got the wrong idea,” Daniel replied.

“No,” the man said. “I don't.”

The call ended.

Just like that.

No threat.

No shouting.

No explanation.

The silence afterward felt worse.

Daniel immediately called the local sheriff.

Within twenty minutes, Sheriff Tom Grayson arrived.

Tom had known Daniel since he moved to Harlo.

He was the kind of man who listened before speaking.

After hearing everything, he crouched beside Lily.

“Can you tell me about your mom?”

Lily nodded.

“My mom's name is Sarah.”

“Where is she now?”

The little girl's lip trembled.

“I don't know.”

The answer broke something inside the room.

She explained between pauses.

Three nights earlier, her mother had rushed her into a car before sunrise.

They had driven for hours.

Sarah had seemed scared.

Very scared.

She kept checking mirrors.

Kept looking over her shoulder.

Then they stopped at a small motel.

That night Sarah handed Lily a folded piece of paper.

On it was Daniel Mercer's address.

“She said if she didn't come back, I had to go to the house with the light.”

Daniel frowned.

“Did your mother know me?”

Lily nodded.

“She said you saved her once.”

Daniel's mind searched backward.

Years.

Hundreds of faces.

Thousands.

Then suddenly he remembered.

Sarah Collins.

Twenty-two years ago.

A young employee.

Single mother.

Brilliant accountant.

Daniel had personally helped her when she was trapped in an abusive relationship.

He had arranged legal support, temporary housing, and a new job transfer.

After that, she moved away.

He never heard from her again.

Until now.

The sheriff exchanged a look with Daniel.

Neither needed words.

Whatever had happened, Sarah trusted him with her daughter.

That was not an accident.

The next morning brought even worse news.

Sarah Collins had been reported missing.

And the man who called?

His name appeared in the police report.

Victor Hale.

Sarah's former partner.

A man with a history of violence that somehow never seemed to stick in court.

For the next week, Lily stayed with Daniel under emergency protective custody.

The arrangement was supposed to be temporary.

But something unexpected happened.

The house changed.

The silence disappeared.

Crayons appeared on the refrigerator.

A stuffed rabbit occupied the couch.

Laughter occasionally echoed through rooms that had forgotten how to hold it.

Daniel found himself cooking breakfast for two.

Helping with homework.

Listening to stories about imaginary dragons.

The farmhouse no longer felt empty.

For the first time in years, it felt alive.

And that terrified him almost as much as losing her.

Because deep down, he knew she might leave.

Then, on the eighth night, everything changed.

A deputy called.

May you like

They had found Sarah.

Alive.
