Chapter 7 - A New Dawn in Windsor Farms

The morning sun rose over Windsor Farms, casting golden light across the brick facades and the sprawling, dew-kissed lawns of the Whitfield estate. Friday morning arrived with a crisp, refreshing breeze that signaled the true beginning of autumn in Virginia, carrying the earthy scent of falling leaves and damp soil.
Denise woke early, as she always did, but for the first time in years, she felt a profound, unhurried lightness in her step. The heavy shroud of suspicion had been completely lifted, replaced by the reality of her new role as Senior Estate Director. As she walked down the second-floor hallway toward her new office suite — a spacious, sunlit room adjacent to the main library that Marshall had ordered fully renovated for her the previous night — she paused by the grandfather clock. The ticking no longer sounded like an indifferent measure of passing time; it felt like a steady, reassuring heartbeat marking a fresh chapter in her life.
At 8:30 AM, Marshall entered the main dining room for breakfast, where Bartholomew was already waiting with the daily briefing tablet and a steaming cup of dark roast coffee.
Good morning, Bartholomew, Marshall said, taking a seat at the head of the long mahogany table. What does the schedule look like today?
Good morning, Mr. Whitfield, Bartholomew replied crisply, tapping the screen. The financial counselors in Virginia Beach confirmed that Master Colton checked into the recovery program late last night without incident. Furthermore, the jewelers from downtown arrived at 7:00 AM to recertify the display case security in the gallery; the emerald brooch is securely back in its velvet housing, fully insured and double-locked.
Good, Marshall nodded, taking a sip of his coffee. And Denise? How is she settling into her new office?
Bartholomew's lips curved into a faint, approving smile. Splendidly, sir. The housekeeping staff has already expressed immense relief and joy regarding her promotion. Several of the senior maids mentioned that justice has finally been served in this house.
As if on cue, the dining room doors swung open gently, and Denise entered carrying a silver tray with fresh pastries and fruit for the morning meeting. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer over her blouse, a subtle nod to her new leadership responsibilities, her posture calm, confident, and radiant.
Good morning, Mr. Whitfield, Bartholomew, Denise said, placing the tray neatly in the center of the table.
Good morning, Denise, Marshall said, looking up with a warm, genuine smile. I trust the new office meets your expectations? It was rather hurriedly put together, but we can customize the layout however you see fit.
It is more than wonderful, Mr. Whitfield, Denise replied, her eyes meeting his with steady warmth. Inez is already claiming that the velvet armchair in the corner belongs to her as her official 'assistant reading nook.'
May you like
Marshall chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that filled the grand dining room. Tell her she is welcome to it whenever she likes. In fact, why don't you bring her up to the gardens this afternoon? The head gardener has just brought in a new batch of autumn pumpkins, and I suspect she would enjoy picking out the best one before the weekend rush.
Denise smiled brightly, a wave of profound gratitude washing over her heart. We would love that, Mr. Whitfield. Thank you.
