Chapter 10 - The Harvest of Tomorrow

The golden hour of late afternoon painted the farmhouse porch in rich hues of amber and rose. The scent of roasted chicken and fresh garden herbs drifted through the open screen door, mingling with the crisp evening breeze.
Lily had finally fallen asleep after a long day of chasing butterflies through the clover field. Mark carried her gently upstairs, his footsteps soft and deliberate on the newly sanded pine floorboards. He laid her down in her crib—a sturdy, beautiful wooden crib he had built with his own hands—and pulled a pale yellow quilt over her shoulders.
He stood there for a long moment, watching her breathe. There was no fear in his chest anymore, only a deep, abiding gratitude. He realized that breaking a generational curse wasn't about erasing the past; it was about choosing a radically different future.
Downstairs, Hannah and Clara were setting the wooden dining table, laughing softly as they argued over whether the pie needed more cinnamon.
Mark walked down the stairs, the wooden steps creaking in a familiar, comforting way. He walked into the kitchen, wrapped his arms around Hannah from behind, and kissed the back of her neck.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Hannah asked, turning in his embrace to look up into his eyes.
“Just thinking about how lucky I am,” Mark said, smiling softly. “I have the most incredible wife in the world, the happiest little girl, and a home filled with actual light instead of secrets.”
Clara smiled, holding up a pitcher of freshly squeezed lemonade. “To new roots,” she toasted, her glass clinking gently against theirs. “And to the families we build by choice, not by blood.”

“To new roots,” Mark and Hannah repeated in unison.
Through the large kitchen window, the sun dipped below the distant horizon, casting a warm, everlasting glow across the fields, signaling the dawn of a future where love was no longer a weapon, but a safe harbor.
