Part 7: The Gala Counterattack

The applause that followed Adrian’s entrance at the gala was deafening. High society loved a comeback story, and the image of the stoic billionaire proudly flanked by his sons and his fiercely defended household director was too powerful to ignore.
As they settled into their designated VIP table near the stage, the tension in the air dissolved into a low, excited hum of conversation.
“Well,” Mara whispered, smoothing the emerald fabric of her dress as she took her seat beside Julian. “I think that officially checked off about twenty PR boxes in thirty seconds.”
Adrian sat down beside her, the phantom smile still lingering faintly on his lips. He poured a glass of sparkling water and slid it toward her. “You looked terrifyingly comfortable in front of fifty cameras, Ms. Ellison.”
“Practice,” Mara replied smoothly, taking a sip. “When you’ve been falsely accused on live television by a toxic ex-fiancé, walking a red carpet in an emerald gown feels like a walk in the park.”
Across the table, Noah and Julian were already eagerly digging through the artisanal bread basket Evelyn had secretly approved for them, whispering excitedly about the chocolate fountain stationed near the dessert bar.
“Thank you,” Adrian said quietly, his voice dropping beneath the roar of the orchestral music playing overhead.
Mara turned her head, surprised. The billionaire rarely expressed vulnerability, let alone gratitude.
“For what?” she asked softly.
“For not letting me hide,” Adrian said, his gray eyes holding hers with an intense, quiet sincerity. “I spent three years building walls around my sons and myself, thinking that if I controlled every variable, nothing else could ever hurt us. I didn't realize I was just building a prison.”
“Grief makes architects of us all,” Mara said gently, her voice full of empathy. “We build fortresses to keep the pain out. But the problem with fortresses is that they keep love out, too.”
Adrian didn't answer immediately. He just looked at her, his expression softening in a way that made Mara’s heart skip a strange, unexpected beat.
Just then, a shadow fell across their table.
“Well, well, well,” a smooth, oily voice drawled.
Adrian didn't even need to look up. His posture instantly stiffened, turning back into the cold, impenetrable Ice King.
Sebastian Vale stood at the edge of their table, flanked by two nervous board members. He forced a thin, venomous smile, his eyes darting from Adrian to Mara, and finally to the twins.
“A very dramatic entrance, nephew,” Sebastian purred, leaning slightly over the table. “Though I must say, bringing a disgraced former teacher to a high-society charity gala is certainly a bold strategy. Are you running out of professional colleagues, or are you simply trying to distract the shareholders from your complete lack of domestic control?”
The table went dead silent. Noah stopped chewing his roll, his eyes flashing with sudden anger as he glared at his great-uncle.
Before Adrian could open his mouth to deliver a verbal execution, Mara stood up.
She didn't raise her voice. She didn't look intimidated. She simply smoothed her skirt, stepped slightly in front of the boys, and looked Sebastian dead in the eye with a calm, chilling smile.
“Good evening, Mr. Vale,” Mara said smoothly, her tone dripping with polished corporate professionalism. “I’m Mara Ellison, Mr. Vale’s household director. I’m surprised you’re so focused on my employment history when your own legal consultants have been so busy this week.”
Sebastian’s fake smile faltered for a split second. His eyes narrowed. “Excuse me? Who let the help speak?”
“The help,” Mara said sweetly, “happens to know that leaking confidential corporate strategy documents to financial journalists to sabotage a four-billion-dollar acquisition is a federal offense under securities law. Isn't that right, Mr. Vale?”
Sebastian’s face lost every trace of color. The two board members standing behind him shifted uncomfortably, exchanging nervous glances.
“You—you have no idea what you're talking about,” Sebastian stammered, his voice losing its oily smoothness.
“Oh, I have the exact paper trail,” Mara replied smoothly, pulling a sleek leather portfolio from her chair. She didn't open it—she didn't need to; it was empty inside, but Sebastian didn't know that. “Bank records linking your offshore accounts in the Caymans to the PR firm that manufactured the smear campaign against both Adrian and myself. Would you like me to hand this directly to the Securities and Exchange Commission tonight, or would you prefer to wait until Monday morning after you resign from the board?”
The silence at the table was absolute.
Adrian watched Mara with unconcealed awe. He had spent months trying to legally pin his uncle down for insider leaks, and here was Mara destroying him with pure, unadulterated psychological bluffing and absolute fearlessness.
Sebastian stared at her, his chest heaving, realization dawning that he had completely underestimated his opponent—and the woman standing beside her.
“You’ll... you’ll hear from my lawyers,” Sebastian choked out, turning on his heel and practically fleeing into the crowd, his nervous board members scrambling to follow him.
Noah let out a loud, triumphant cheer. “You totally destroyed him!”
Julian giggled, kicking his legs under the table. “Uncle Sebastian looked like a ghost!”
Adrian looked up at Mara, a slow, breathtaking smile breaking across his face—a smile so warm and genuine that it completely transformed his stern features.

“Remind me,” Adrian murmured, his voice thick with a mixture of profound respect and deep fascination, “never, under any circumstances, to get on your bad side.”
Mara smiled back, her eyes sparkling. “Consider yourself warned, Mr. Vale.”
