Chapter 9 - The New Legacy

Two years later, Collins Properties celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary with a gala dinner at the Columbus Convention Center.

The room was filled with civic leaders, contractors, architects, and employees. The atmosphere was light, vibrant, and triumphant—a far cry from the dark days of near-bankruptcy and scandal that had threatened to destroy the firm.

I stood near the stage in a tailored suit, talking with our head of civil engineering, when Dad walked over.

At sixty-eight, Richard Collins looked healthier than he had in decades. The tension line between his eyebrows had dissolved, replaced by laugh lines born from afternoons spent fishing with his grandsons and tending to his backyard garden.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced over the microphone. "Please welcome the founder of Collins Properties, Mr. Richard Collins!"

Applause echoed through the ballroom as Dad stepped up to the podium. He adjusted his glasses, looked out over the crowd of two hundred people, and smiled warmly.

"Thank you all for being here tonight," Dad began, his voice resonant and full of genuine warmth. "Thirty-five years ago, I started this company with a single pickup truck and a dream of building structures that would stand the test of time."

He paused, looking down at the front table where Mom, Emily, Noah, and Mason were sitting together.

"For a long time, I thought my legacy was built out of concrete, steel, and balance sheets," Dad continued. "I believed that being a strong leader meant being ruthless, holding power, and never admitting a fault. I was wrong."

The room went completely silent, listening to the founder's unscripted words.

"A true legacy isn't built on glass skyscrapers," Dad said, looking directly at me. "It’s built on character. It’s built on truth, humility, and the courage to protect the people who depend on you. Three years ago, this company almost collapsed because of my pride and my blindness. And it was saved not by my genius, but by the honor, brilliance, and strength of my son, Daniel."

Dad gestured toward the stage.

"Daniel took a broken company and transformed it into a place of integrity, fairness, and community," Dad declared, his voice booming with pride. "He didn't just save our business; he saved our family. Please join me in honoring our Chief Executive Officer, my son, Daniel Collins!"

The ballroom erupted into a standing ovation.

I walked up the steps to the stage, feeling the warmth of two hundred clapping hands, but my eyes were fixed entirely on my father.

When I reached the podium, Dad didn't just shake my hand. He pulled me into a fierce, tight embrace.

"I love you, son," Dad whispered into my ear, holding me tight. "I am so proud of you."

"I love you too, Dad," I whispered back.
