Chapter 7 - The Choice at Montauk Point

The damp wind off the Atlantic howled through the cracked concrete walls of the Montauk lighthouse basement. The tide was rising fast, slamming against the rocks outside with a deep, rhythmic thunder.
Rory Starks walked down the stone steps into the center of the room. His hands were empty, held out to his sides to show he carried no weapons.
Victoria stood up, the hunting knife catching the faint, greenish light of an emergency bulb hanging from the ceiling. Behind her, Lily and Rose scrambled off the bench, running toward their father.
“Daddy!” they cried.
“Stay back, girls,” Victoria warned, her knife flicking slightly toward them. The twins stopped instantly, their big eyes wide with sudden fear.
Rory’s eyes locked onto Victoria, ignoring the damp chill of the room. “They’re out of it, Victoria. Let the girls go. Take me.”
“Oh, it’s not that simple, Rory,” Victoria smiled, stepping closer, the blade glinting between them. “Ten years ago, your men dragged my brother into the freezing cellars of Prague. You stood there and watched him beg for his life. Did you give him a choice?”
“He broke the code,” Rory said evenly. “He sold out our routes to the federal marshals. It was business.”
“And this is business,” Victoria hissed, her voice rising with a sudden, suppressed rage. “Everything is business with you, isn’t it? Blood, territory, money. You think you can build an empire on the graves of everyone who stood in your way and never pay the price.”
She pressed the tip of the knife against Rory’s chest, right over his heart. The fabric of his shirt parted, a single drop of dark blood welling up against the white cotton.
“Kneel,” Victoria whispered.
Rory didn’t blink. He looked past the blade into the hardened eyes of the woman who had infiltrated his home, manipulated his children, and brought his empire to its knees.
Slowly, deliberately, Rory bent his knees and knelt on the cold stone floor.
Lily covered her mouth with her small hands, tears spilling over her cheeks. Rose buried her face in her sister’s shoulder, sobbing quietly.
Victoria raised the knife high, the pale emergency light catching the steel.
“This is for Prague,” she whispered, her arm trembling slightly as she prepared to drive the blade home.
At that exact second, the heavy iron door at the top of the stairs blew inward with an earsplitting roar.
Smoke grenades tumbled down the stone steps, filling the basement with thick, choking white fog in less than a second.
“Federal Agents! Nobody move!” a voice thundered through the smoke.
Victoria spun around, cursing, her tactical instincts kicking in as she grabbed Lily by the arm. “If anyone moves, the girl dies!”
Before she could pull Lily back into the shadows, a dark shadow materialized through the smoke behind her.
A heavy silver-handled cane cracked across Victoria’s wrist with the force of a falling beam.
With a sharp cry of pain, Victoria dropped the knife. It clattered against the stone floor.
Marcus grabbed her other arm, twisting it behind her back and snapping heavy steel zip-ties around her wrists with ruthless efficiency.
Through the clearing smoke, another figure stepped down the stairs. It wasn’t an FBI agent.
It was Julian Vane, flanked by four federal marshals and holding a heavily encrypted tablet. His designer suit was ruined, covered in plaster dust, but his expression was one of absolute, triumphant relief.
“Well,” Julian panted, wiping sweat from his forehead. “I told you tracking her offshore accounts would pay off, Rory.”
Rory stood up slowly, dusting off his knees. He looked at Julian, then at Victoria, who glared at him with venomous hatred even as the zip-ties cut into her skin.
“You made a deal with the feds, Julian?” Rory asked, his voice flat.
“Not just the feds,” a new voice stepped out from the top of the stairs.
A tall woman in a crisp federal prosecutor’s suit walked down into the basement. Her badge gleamed in the dim light.
“Director Miller, DOJ Organized Crime Task Force,” she announced, flashing her credentials at Rory. “Mr. Starks, your corporate rival here came to us three hours ago with a complete financial trail linking Victoria Cruz to international syndicate money laundering, cyber-extortion, and domestic terrorism.”
Miller looked at Victoria. “Victoria Cruz, aka the Ghost of Berlin, you’re under arrest for federal racketeering, child endangerment, and conspiracy.”
As federal agents swarmed the basement, hoisting Victoria up and dragging her toward the stairs, she managed one last look back at Rory.

“You think this is over, Rory?” she shouted over the roar of the ocean. “The syndicate doesn't die with me! Another ghost will always take my place!”
“Let them come,” Rory replied coldly, pulling Lily and Rose into his arms and holding them tight against his chest. “My house is secure now.”
