Chapter 10 - Christmas Full Circle

Five years after the fateful night at David’s party—and ten years since Lucas had first walked away—Christmas Eve returned to Cedar Ridge with a quiet, magical snowstorm.

The town was covered in a pristine blanket of white powder. Festive lights twinkled on every house down Oak Street, casting warm red, green, and gold reflections across the snowy driveways.

Inside the Everheart mansion, the massive stone fireplace roared with a cozy, crackling fire. A giant fourteen-foot pine tree stood in the corner of the grand living room, decorated with hundreds of vintage ornaments, warm white lights, and a bright silver star at the very top.

The house smelled of roasted chestnuts, pine needles, and fresh apple cider.

Ethan and Miles, now nearly ten years old, were sitting on the rug near the hearth, playing a intense game of chess. Ethan was thoughtful and deliberate with his moves, while Miles played with energetic flair, making theatrical sound effects whenever he captured a piece.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Lily was sitting between Lucas’s knees on the carpet, trying enthusiastically to wrap a small wooden toy block in a piece of discarded wrapping paper.

“Like this, Daddy?” Lily babbled, looking up at Lucas with her big, bright gray eyes—the exact same storm-gray eyes that run through the Everheart bloodline.

“Just like that, sweetheart,” Lucas smiled, helping her small hands tape the paper down. “You’re a master gift wrapper.”

Avery walked into the living room, carrying a tray with four mugs of steaming hot cocoa topped with whipped cream and two small cups of warm milk for Lily. She wore a festive green velvet dress, her hair pinned up gracefully.

“Hot chocolate time!” Avery announced cheerfully.

Miles instantly abandoned his chess piece. “Yes! Marshmallows!”

Ethan neatly reset his captured pieces on the board before standing up and accepting a mug from Avery. “Thank you, Mom.”

“Checkmate is going to have to wait, Miles,” Ethan grinned at his twin brother.

“I was winning anyway!” Miles claimed proudly, taking a big gulp of hot cocoa and instantly getting a mustache of white whipped cream on his upper lip.

Everyone laughed. Lucas stood up, picking up Lily in his arms, and walked over to stand beside Avery near the tall French doors that looked out over the snowy backyard.

Through the glass, the snow fell peacefully, large white flakes drifting lazily down through the dark winter sky.

Avery leaned against Lucas’s side, resting her hand on his forearm. “Remember ten years ago?” she whispered softly, so the boys wouldn't hear. “Where you were?”

Lucas looked into the dark reflection of the window pane. He remembered the cold, lonely hotel room in Tokyo where he had spent Christmas Eve ten years ago—surrounded by spreadsheets, powerpoint presentations, and a soul-crushing silence that no amount of money could fill.

He looked around his warm, vibrant living room now: his twin sons laughing and arguing good-naturedly over chess strategies near the crackling fire, his beautiful toddler daughter giggling as she played with his collar, and his wife—the woman who had given him the ultimate gift of forgiveness and unconditional love—standing wrapped in his arms.

“I was lost in the dark,” Lucas said, his voice deep with emotion. “And now I’m home.”

Ethan walked over to stand beside them, holding his warm mug in both hands. He looked up at the window, watching the snow fall over the wooden fort his father had built for them years ago.

“Dad?” Ethan asked softly.

Lucas lowered himself slightly so he could look into his eldest son’s eyes. “Yeah, Ethan?”

“I’m glad you came back that Christmas,” Ethan said simply, his voice filled with a quiet, mature sincerity that touched Lucas to his very core.

Lucas felt a warm tear trace a path down his cheek, but he didn't wipe it away. He wrapped his free arm around Ethan’s shoulders, pulling the young boy tight against his side. Miles ran over a second later, plowing into the group hug with his characteristic boundless enthusiasm.

“Group hug!” Miles cheered, wrapping his arms around everyone’s legs.

May you like

Avery laughed, her eyes shining with joyful tears as she wrapped her arms around all of them.

Outside, the snow continued to fall softly over Cedar Ridge, wrapping the world in a quiet, peaceful blanket of white. Inside, surrounded by the warmth of the hearth and the unconditional love of his family, Lucas Everheart held his wife and children tight, knowing with complete and absolute certainty that he would never walk away again.
