Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web of Deceit

Sleep did not come to me that night. I sat on the edge of the hotel bed, staring out at the city lights, my mind working with a cold, terrifying precision. For three years, I had compromised. I had swallowed my pride, tolerated Dolores's snide remarks about my modest background, endured Karla's arrogant jabs, and forgiven Iván's chronic passivity. I had believed that staying silent was the price of keeping a family together for my daughter.

Now, I realized that my tolerance had only invited cruelty.

By 6:00 AM, I was already at my computer. Before addressing the assault, I needed to secure our financial and legal ground. For months, Iván had been pressuring me to transfer my personal savings—money I earned from my hard work as a corporate auditor—into a joint account under his father's name, claiming it was for "family tax optimization." I had resisted, but I knew he had access to my laptop passwords.

I logged into my bank accounts immediately. Sure enough, there were three pending transfer requests initiated two days ago from our home IP address—transfers attempting to move forty percent of my savings to an account owned by Rogelio. Because I was out of town, the bank had put a security hold on the transfers pending my physical confirmation.

I cancelled every single transfer, changed all my banking passwords, revoked Iván's power of attorney over my secondary accounts, and froze our joint credit cards.

At 8:30 AM, I called Licenciado Arturo Mendoza, a respected family lawyer and criminal defense attorney in Guadalajara whom I had met through my firm's corporate legal network.

"Elena," Arturo said after hearing my voice, which was quiet but completely devoid of hesitation. "Are you in a safe place?"

"I am in a hotel with Renata," I replied. "I need to file a formal criminal complaint for domestic violence, assault, and child abuse. And I need emergency full legal custody of my daughter."

"Do you have evidence?" he asked professionally.

"I have clear HD video with high-fidelity audio of the physical assault against me, the verbal abuse, the conspiracy to frame my daughter for theft, and the confession of the actual perpetrators who stole the gold bracelet," I said. "I also have the medical report from the clinic I visited late last night documenting my split lip and bruises, along with photos of my daughter's shaved head."

There was a brief pause on the line. I heard the rustle of papers as Arturo sat up straight.

"Bring everything to my office at ten o'clock," Arturo said, his voice hardening with professional resolve. "We are going to make sure these people never come near you or Renata again."

When I arrived at Arturo’s office in Midtown Guadalajara, he reviewed the footage. As he watched Rogelio slap me and listened to the cold conversation between Rogelio and Karla framing little Renata, his expression turned grim.

"This is not just a civil custody dispute, Elena," Arturo said, leaning across his mahogany desk. "This is felony assault, child abuse, and attempted extortion. Rogelio and Karla are facing severe criminal charges. And your husband, Iván—by attempting to cover it up and demanding you apologize—is an accessory after the fact."

"What about the apartment?" I asked. "It's registered under both Iván's name and mine, but I paid eighty percent of the down payment."

"We will file an emergency injunction for exclusive occupancy of the home based on domestic violence," Arturo explained. "The court will order them evicted immediately. Furthermore, we will file for divorce, an immediate restraining order, and full parental authority for you."

"Do it," I said without a second of hesitation. "File everything today."

As I signed the legal documents, my phone buzzed in my bag. It was a message from Iván: "Elena, stop being dramatic. My parents said you threatened them before leaving. My dad has a high heart condition, you know that! If anything happens to him, it’s on you. Come back right now and apologize to my mother."

I did not reply. Instead, I saved the message and forwarded it directly to Arturo.

"Excellent," Arturo smiled grimly. "Keep letting him send these. Every message he sends proves his complicity and intimidation tactics."
