Chapter 7 - The Grand Estate on Oak Ridge

The car ride lasted nearly forty minutes, taking them away from the congested urban grid and up into the rolling, wooded hills of Oak Ridge—an exclusive enclave of sprawling private estates hidden behind wrought-iron gates and ancient oak trees.
As the Rolls-Royce turned through a pair of grand stone pillars and rolled up a long, winding driveway, Sophie pressed her face against the tinted glass, her mouth forming a silent O of pure astonishment.
Rising before them was a magnificent modern-classic stone manor surrounded by immaculately manicured gardens, sparkling fountains, and sweeping lawns that rolled down toward a private pond.
"Dad," Sophie breathed, her voice filled with awe as the car glided to a stop near the grand front entrance. "Is this a castle?"
"It’s our house, bug," David smiled, opening the door and stepping out to offer his hand to Rachel.
As Rachel stepped out of the vehicle, she looked up at the towering arched doorway and the warm, welcoming lights glowing from within. For a woman who had spent the last seven years struggling to pay utility bills in a damp little blue house on Maple Street, the sheer scale of the estate felt almost unreal.
"David... this is incredible," Rachel murmured, her hand resting lightly in his. "You didn't have to buy a palace."
"It's not a palace," David corrected gently, leading them up the stone steps. "It's a home. And it waited seven years for its real family to arrive."
The heavy oak front doors swung open automatically, revealing a breathtaking grand foyer with a soaring vaulted ceiling, a crystal chandelier that caught the sunlight like a prism, and a sweeping double staircase made of polished mahogany.
Standing in the foyer to greet them was a smiling elderly woman in a neat grey dress—Mrs. Higgins, the legendary head housekeeper who had managed David’s properties for over two decades.
"Welcome home, Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Bennett... and Miss Sophie," Mrs. Higgins said warmly, dipping her head with genuine affection. "Everything is prepared. Dinner is in the oven, and the master suites are ready."
Sophie’s eyes lit up. "Can I see the kitchen?" she asked instantly. "The fix-it man... I mean, Dad... promised me a big refrigerator!"
Mrs. Higgins chuckled, a warm, booming sound that immediately put everyone at ease. "Of course, young lady. Follow me. It’s right this way."
Sophie didn't need to be told twice. She bolted down the expansive hallway, her small shoes clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble floor, following the delicious aroma of roasted garlic and baking bread straight into the heart of the home.
David and Rachel walked more slowly behind her, their fingers intertwined, savoring the quiet peace of the moment.
When they reached the kitchen, Sophie was already standing in front of a massive, professional-grade stainless steel refrigerator with double glass doors. It looked like something out of a Michelin-starred restaurant.
Sophie reached up, grabbed the heavy chrome handle, and pulled it open.
A brilliant, warm LED light flooded the interior, illuminating shelves stacked high with fresh cartons of milk, gleaming rows of colorful fruit, jars of organic preserves, cheeses, yogurts, and a whole shelf dedicated exclusively to fresh strawberries and crisp apples.
Sophie stood there in absolute silence for a moment, her small face bathed in the soft glow of the refrigerator light.
She turned around, her green eyes shining with tears of absolute wonder, and looked up at David and Rachel.
"It's not empty," Sophie whispered, her voice trembling slightly with joy. "It's never going to be empty again, is it?"
May you like
David knelt down beside her, wrapping his arms around her small shoulders, while Rachel knelt on her other side, pulling them both into a tight, perfect embrace.
"Never, sweetheart," David whispered, resting his cheek against her soft hair. "Not as long as we're together."
