Part 2 – The Secret Hidden Inside

The patrol officers arrived less than twenty minutes later, followed by Aaron in an unmarked detective's SUV.
The moment he stepped through our front door, he stopped being my older brother and became the investigator everyone in his department respected.
"Where is it?"
I handed him the brown paper bag.
He never touched the bear with bare hands. Wearing latex gloves, he carefully examined the mismatched eye before placing the toy inside an evidence container.
"You did exactly the right thing," he said quietly.
Daniel folded his arms tightly.
"Can you tell if it's recording?"
Aaron nodded.
"Looks like it."
The room became painfully silent.
Lily peeked around the corner.
"Mommy... are the police taking Teddy?"
I forced a smile.
"They're just borrowing him for a little while, sweetheart."
She looked disappointed but accepted the explanation.
Aaron crouched beside her.
"I promise we'll bring you a better teddy."
That earned a tiny smile.
Two hours later we were sitting inside Aaron's office.
A forensic electronics technician carefully opened the teddy bear under a camera.
Nobody spoke.
When the stuffing was removed, everyone froze.
Hidden inside the bear wasn't just a miniature camera.
There was a lithium battery.
A tiny microphone.
A motion sensor.
And a wireless transmitter.
The technician frowned.
"This isn't some cheap internet gadget."
Aaron looked over.
"What do you mean?"
"It's professionally assembled."
He pointed at the circuit board.
"Whoever built this knew exactly what they were doing."
Daniel's face darkened.
"So someone intentionally made this?"
"Yes."
The technician connected the memory module to a secure computer.
Seconds later, video files appeared.
Everyone expected to see our living room.
Instead...
The earliest recording began before the package had even been mailed.
The camera had been activated while sitting on a workbench.
The screen showed hands assembling the teddy bear.
No face.
Only hands.
Then a woman's unmistakable voice floated through the speakers.
"Margaret will love this. She'll finally know what that girl is teaching our granddaughter."
Daniel's breathing stopped.
He knew that voice.
"So do I," he whispered.
"It belongs to my aunt... Vivian."
Aaron looked up sharply.
"The same aunt who lives with your parents?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"She's been feeding my mother conspiracy theories for years."
The next recording was worse.
Margaret—Daniel's mother—picked up the finished teddy bear.
She laughed.
"Now we'll finally know whether Claire deserves to raise Lily."
My stomach twisted.
She wasn't sending a birthday gift.
She was sending surveillance.
Aaron immediately requested search warrants.
But before a judge would approve them, detectives needed to establish intent.
That meant one thing.
We couldn't alert Margaret.
We had to let her believe the bear was still inside our house.
For the next three days...
We lived normally.
Or at least pretended to.
The teddy bear sat inside an evidence locker while police quietly monitored every phone call connected to Daniel's parents.
On the second day...
They got exactly what they needed.
A recorded conversation.
Margaret asked Vivian,
"Have you checked the camera feed today?"
Vivian answered,
"No signal."
Margaret sighed.
"Maybe they unplugged the router."
Aaron smiled when he heard the recording.
"They think the bear is connected to the family's Wi-Fi."
He leaned back.
"They've just admitted they expected to spy on your home."
May you like
Now they had probable cause.
The warrants were signed that afternoon.
