Part 6: Restoring Integrity

Over the next six months, Irene Owens proved that her sharp instincts and unyielding sense of justice were far more valuable to Sterling Global Capital than any spreadsheet or algorithmic model. As the new Head of Corporate Integrity and Facilities Oversight, she didn’t just manage buildings; she transformed the corporate culture from the ground up.
She instituted comprehensive worker protection programs, direct-hire policies that eliminated abusive third-party outsourcing agencies, and an anonymous whistleblower hotline that went straight to her desk—and consequently, straight to Lawrence’s attention. Under her watchful eye, no worker, contractor, or junior employee could ever be sidelined, ignored, or exploited again.
Her office quickly became an unofficial sanctuary. Analysts, administrative assistants, and maintenance staff alike knew that Irene’s door was always open. She listened to their grievances with genuine empathy, offering guidance and practical solutions.
Billy, meanwhile, became the building’s unofficial mascot. Given a safe, designated playroom adjacent to his mother’s office equipped with endless toys, art supplies, and a revolving door of adoring executives who brought him snacks, the four-year-old thrived. He even grew quite fond of Lawrence, frequently marching into the CEO's fiftieth-floor office with his toy cars to "inspect" Lawrence’s desk organization.
One crisp autumn afternoon, Lawrence sat at his desk reviewing a glowing quarterly compliance report submitted by Irene. The employee turnover rate in support services had dropped to near zero, workplace satisfaction scores were at an all-time high, and public relations had praised the firm’s ethical overhaul as a masterclass in corporate responsibility.
Christopher Vance walked in without knocking, holding a sleek tablet.
"You look entirely too pleased with yourself, Lawrence," Christopher teased, pulling up a chair. "Or are you just thrilled that little Billy spent the entire morning using your executive stapler as a monster truck ramp?"
Lawrence smiled, closing the file folder. "Billy has excellent taste in heavy machinery. How is the restructuring of the regional facilities coming along?"
"Finished, signed, and sealed," Christopher said, his tone turning slightly more serious. "And Martin Pike’s trial concluded this morning. The judge didn't show any leniency. He’s facing five years for extortion, falsification of official documents, and corporate fraud. His pension has been seized and redirected into the employee welfare fund—courtesy of Irene’s legal team."
Lawrence nodded slowly. Justice had finally caught up. The dark chapter of the past was officially closed, replaced by a foundation built on truth rather than convenience.
"Has Irene mentioned the upcoming annual charity gala?" Christopher asked casually.
Lawrence paused. "The gala? No, she hasn't."

"Well, she should. Because as per tradition, the keynote address is given by the CEO—and this year, the board unanimously voted to invite Irene to co-host and share the story of the firm’s ethical renaissance."
Lawrence gazed thoughtfully toward the window, watching the golden afternoon light catch the tip of the spire across the street. "I think," Lawrence said quietly, "it’s time the rest of Wall Street learned what true strength looks like."
