Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call

It was 2:17 a.m. when the 911 operator took a call she nearly brushed off as a prank.

A small, shaky voice barely came through the line.

“Ma’am… my parents won’t wake up… and the house smells strange…”

The operator immediately became alert.

This was not a joke.

“What’s your name?” she asked steadily.

“Sofia… I’m seven years old…”

“Where are your parents right now?”

“In their bed… I tried to wake them, but they won’t get up…”

Emergency steps were put in motion at once. A patrol unit was sent while the operator stayed on the line, calmly guiding Sofia to leave the house and wait outside in the yard.

When officers arrived at the small chalet on the edge of town, they found Sofia standing barefoot on the grass, holding a stuffed animal. Her eyes were red, but she wasn’t crying.

That worried them more than tears would have.

“Where are your parents?” Officer Morales asked gently.

“Upstairs,” she said. “In their room. They’re not moving.”

As the officers reached the front door, they noticed it right away—the smell.

Gas.

Light, but unmistakable.

Morales radioed for the fire department.

Sofia quietly added that days earlier, she’d heard her mother mention the boiler was making unusual noises—but no one ever called a technician.

Wearing protective masks, the officers went inside.

What they saw made them pause.

Sofia’s parents were lying in bed. No signs of a struggle. No visible injuries. Both were unconscious, breathing very lightly. The bedroom air was heavy with gas. A detector on the wall was beeping weakly—its batteries long overdue for replacement.

They were brought outside immediately.

An ambulance arrived within minutes.

From the yard, Sofia watched as paramedics worked quickly.

“Are they going to wake up?” she asked.

“We’re going to do everything we can,” a nurse told her.

But inside the house, something still seemed off.

The main gas valve was fully open—more than a typical accident would explain. And a ventilation duct had been blocked with a towel.

Officer Morales exchanged a look with his partner.

“This doesn’t look like simple neglect,” he said quietly. “It looks deliberate.”

As the ambulance drove away and dawn began to color the sky, Sofia sat in the back of the patrol car, wrapped in a blanket, unaware that what happened that night wasn’t the end of a crisis—

But the start of a far more complicated situation.

Financial pressure.

Serious concerns.

And a chain of desperate choices that led to that silent night.

And although Sofia couldn’t know it yet, the facts that were about to come to light would change her life forever.
