Chapter 10 - The Table We Built

Ten years after that fateful night in Querétaro, the sun set over a magnificent, sprawling garden in San Jerónimo, casting a warm, golden glow across a long, beautifully decorated wooden table.

There were no plastic trays of leftovers here, no ivory suits designed to intimidate, and no artificial hierarchies based on hollow family names.

Instead, the long table was surrounded by people who mattered: loyal friends, brilliant colleagues, trusted advisors, and, most importantly, two remarkable young women.

Sofía, now eighteen and standing tall with the confident poise of a future architect and entrepreneur, was laughing as she poured sparkling cider into her sister’s glass. Valentina, fifteen and full of vibrant artistic energy, was excitedly showing guests the preliminary blueprints for a community art center she was designing for one of Horizonte Capital’s upcoming social initiatives.

I stood on the veranda of our home, watching them with a heart full of profound, unshakeable peace.

Andrés had occasionally sent birthday cards through legal channels over the years, and true to my word, I had never blocked him from sending letters or financial support to his daughters when he finally managed to save a little from his honest labor. The girls knew their father; they visited him occasionally on weekends, seeing him not as an almighty patriarch or a fallen king, but simply as a flawed human being who was trying to learn how to be better. They loved him with the balanced, mature grace I had taught them—without illusions, but with open hearts.

As I walked down the steps into the garden, Sofía caught sight of me and immediately ran over, throwing her arms around my neck just like she used to when she was a little girl.

“Mom! Come sit down! The best seat at the head of the table is saved right here for you!”

I smiled, looking around the table at the laughter, the warmth, and the genuine love that filled the air.

“Thank you, my love,” I said softly, taking my place at the center of the gathering. “But around this table, nobody is at the head, and nobody is at the side. We all share the same horizon.”

We raised our glasses together as the evening stars began to twinkle above us, illuminating a future we had built with our own hands—strong, bright, and endlessly free.
