Chapter 8 - A Place to Call Home

The sixty days that followed were a whirlwind of positive transformation.

With temporary custody officially established, Eleanor helped me enroll Graham in Oakhaven Elementary School. The school had an exceptional special education program with dedicated speech therapists and sensory-friendly classrooms.

On his first day, I was terrified he would have a meltdown or feel overwhelmed. But when I picked him up at three o'clock, he ran out of the school gates with a massive smile on his face, holding a drawing of a rocket ship.

"Nellie! Look!" he shouted, jumping up and down. "My teacher, Ms. Clara, has a weighted vest in the classroom! And she lets me count by prime numbers when I feel nervous!"

I caught him in a hug, swinging him around as tears of pure happiness filled my eyes. "That's amazing, champ! See? I told you school could be fun."

Meanwhile, Arthur kept his promise. He helped us move into the beautiful, spacious two-bedroom apartment directly above the Rusty Anchor Diner & Bookstore. It had hard wooden floors, big bay windows that let in streams of warm sunlight, and a view of the lake in the distance. Arthur helped me paint Graham’s room a soft, calming shade of blue, and together we built a custom book tower for his growing collection of math and science manuals.

My mother attempted her supervised visitations twice during those two months. I dropped Graham off at the state family center with a court officer, but the visits were painful and awkward. Cynthia spent the time weeping and begging Graham to tell the judge he wanted to come home. Her actions only confused and stressed him. After the second visit, Graham sat in the car and looked at me with serious, quiet eyes.

"Nellie," he whispered. "I love Mom. But I don't want to live in Cincinnati. I want to live here with you and Arthur. I feel safe here."

His words reinforced my determination. When the final custody hearing took place in late March, the Guardian ad Litem submitted a glowing, fifty-page report recommending that permanent legal guardianship be awarded to me. The report highlighted Graham’s dramatic academic and emotional progress, the exceptional stability of our living situation in Oakhaven, and the severe psychological risk of returning him to our mother's environment.

Judge Reyes didn't hesitate. She signed the final decree granting me full, permanent legal guardianship of Graham. Cynthia was stripped of custodial rights, retaining only limited, monitored communication privileges until Graham reached adulthood.

As we stepped out of the courthouse that day, the heavy burden that had weighed on my chest for months finally dissolved into the fresh, cool spring air. We were free. We were legally, permanently safe.
