Chapter 5 - The Corporate Retaliation

The lobby of my corporate headquarters downtown smelled of polished marble, expensive espresso, and quiet, ruthless ambition. As I walked through the glass revolving doors, the security guard at the front desk looked up, expecting my usual neat ponytail and sharp business suit. Instead, what he saw was a striking, bald woman walking with the posture of an absolute conqueror.
He blinked twice, nearly dropping his clipboard, before catching himself and flashing a respectful nod.
“Good morning, Ms. Vance,” he said quickly.
“Good morning, Marcus,” I replied, not breaking stride as I stepped into the private executive elevator.
By the time I reached the thirty-second floor, my mind was already operating at maximum capacity. The personal chaos of my home life felt distant, like a bad movie I had already walked out of. When the elevator doors slid open, my executive assistant, Chloe, was standing right there with a heavy stack of quarterly reports and a steaming cup of dark roast coffee.
“Good morning, Mariana,” Chloe said, her eyes widening slightly as she took in my shaved head. She didn't ask questions; she was too professional for that. She just offered a supportive, knowing smile. “The regional board meeting was moved up to ten o'clock. Mr. Sterling wants your direct input on the Midwest expansion metrics.”
“Good,” I said, taking the coffee from her hand and stepping into my expansive corner office overlooking the Chicago skyline. “Let him wait a few minutes. I have an administrative task to handle first.”
I sat down behind my massive mahogany desk, placed my laptop down, and opened a secure browser window.
For the past three years, while Daniel and Eleanor treated me like an unpaid maid who happened to fund their lifestyle, I had quietly built something else. I had invested heavily in independent tech startups, real estate syndications, and high-yield venture funds—all under a private holding company registered solely in my maiden name. While they thought every penny I earned was going into the joint family pool, a massive, untouchable fortress of wealth was growing quietly in the background.
And now, it was time to deploy it.
I pulled up the corporate directory, searching for a very specific name: Vance Consulting & Associates.
It was Daniel’s boutique firm—the one he claimed was about to land a major contract, the one he constantly used as an excuse for his lack of financial contribution. In reality, it was a failing, over-leveraged shell company that survived entirely on small-scale corporate sub-contracts and, unbeknownst to him until recently, emergency cash injections I had occasionally funneled through third-party grants just to keep him from having a nervous breakdown at dinner.
I opened my corporate banking portal and pulled up Vance Consulting’s primary operational credit line.
Daniel was listed as the sole managing director. But the master guarantor—the entity legally responsible for backing every single corporate debt, office lease, and equipment loan—was me.
My fingers danced across the mechanical keyboard with cold precision.
Action: Revoke Master Guarantor Status.
Action: Call All Outstanding Corporate Notes Immediately Due.
Action: File Notice of Insolvency Trigger.
A pop-up window flashed on the screen: Warning: This action will result in the immediate liquidation and freezing of Vance Consulting & Associates assets within two hours. Proceed?
I didn't even hesitate. I clicked Yes.
Just like that, Daniel’s precious company—his fragile little ego-project, his sole excuse for treating me like a domestic servant—ceased to exist in the eyes of the financial world.
Chloe knocked twice on the open office door before stepping inside, holding a tablet.
“Mr. Sterling is asking for you in the boardroom, Mariana. He says the expansion proposal needs your sign-off before the investors fly in from New York.”
I stood up, smoothing the front of my gray sweater, and picked up my tablet. My reflection in the glass partition of my office looked fierce, unyielding, and entirely free.
“Tell Mr. Sterling I’ll be there in thirty seconds,” I said. “And Chloe?”
“Yes, Mariana?”
“Order a locksmith for my residential property in Evanston. Have them arrive at exactly twelve-fifteen this afternoon to replace all exterior deadbolts. Make sure the locks are heavy-duty.”
May you like
Chloe grinned, a bright, triumphant smile that lit up her entire face.
“Consider it done, boss.”
