Chapter 1 - The Flare Over Dark Water

My name is Claire Bennett, and three hours earlier I had been unconscious in a maternal ICU at St. Vincent’s in Tampa while doctors tried to stop my kidneys from shutting down.
My daughter Lily was two doors down with seizures and chemical burns in her throat.
The doctors first told me it looked like food poisoning.
Then toxicology came back.
Not food.
Antifreeze.
Low doses over time in my electrolyte packets and prenatal vitamins. Enough to make me weak, confused, easy to discredit. Enough to send Lily into the ICU after she drank from my water bottle in the car.
And while I was being pumped full of fluids and fighting to keep my unborn son alive, my husband, Ethan, had my sister Marissa post beach photos from Aruba on his account.
Perfect family. Fresh start.
Fresh start.
That was what Ethan used to call it whenever he wanted to erase something messy.
A debt.
A lie.
A woman.
The divorce papers on my tray were already signed by him. Full custody request. Emergency financial control. A statement claiming I was unstable, paranoid, and abusing prescription medication during pregnancy.
He had a plan for everything.
Except one thing.
The nursery camera.
Two weeks before I collapsed, Lily had complained that “Aunt Marissa kept making Daddy whisper in the baby room.” I checked the security app once, saw nothing, and forgot about it.
I should not have forgotten.
Because the nursery camera auto-backed up everything to a cloud account Ethan didn’t know existed.
The detectives, Ruiz and Fallon, stepped into my room just after sunset.
Detective Ruiz pulled a chair close to my bed.
“Mrs. Bennett,” she said gently, “we believe someone in your home deliberately poisoned you. We need to know if you’ve got anything.”
I could barely lift my arm, but I reached for my phone.
My hands were shaking so badly that Detective Fallon had to hold it steady while Face ID unlocked.
I opened the backup app.
One folder.
One date.
One red upload button.
I pressed it.
The first video loaded instantly.
Marissa stood in my kitchen wearing my robe, laughing while Ethan unscrewed the cap on my prenatal bottle.
Then his voice came through clear as glass.
“Once the baby’s gone and Claire looks crazy, the house is ours.”
Detective Ruiz went completely still.
Then the second file began to load.
Its title was only four words long.
LILY - POOL - DO NOT DELETE
The heart monitor beside me started screaming.

And in that moment, the little red upload button on my screen no longer looked like an app.
It looked like the first flare fired over dark water, showing just how many bodies were floating underneath.
