Chapter 7 - The Unravelling

The boardroom exploded into absolute chaos. Reporters rushed forward, their camera flashes creating a blinding light show. Corporate executives leapt from their seats, murmuring in disbelief, while Michael stood paralyzed behind the head of the table, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

“Clear the room! Everyone out!” Michael screamed desperately, trying to sweep the financial documents off the table and into his briefcase with trembling hands. “This is a private corporate matter! Get those cameras out of here!”

“Nobody moves,” Detective Miller announced, stepping into the room with four plainclothes officers behind him. He flashed his badge high in the air. “This entire floor is now an active crime scene.”

“Crime scene?” Michael stammered, backing away toward the panoramic window. “What are you talking about? This is my company! My wife has had a mental breakdown! She’s delirious from her accident!”

I walked slowly up the center aisle, the sharp click of my heels rhythmic and cold. With every step I took, Michael shrank back further.

“I was never delirious, Michael,” I said, stopping just three feet away from him. “I heard everything. I heard you standing beside my bed, discussing how you were going to shut off my life support. I heard you complaining about the cost of keeping me alive. And I heard Vanessa talking about taking my son to Connecticut.”

Vanessa was sobbing hysterically now, huddled in the corner. “Valerie, please! He made me do it! Michael planned everything! He told me you were going to cut me off! He forced me to transfer the money!”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Michael roared, turning on her with terrifying ferocity. “Shut your mouth!”

“She doesn't need to speak, Michael,” Evelyn said, stepping forward and placing a heavy binder onto the center of the conference table. “We already have the digital paper trail. We have the offshore accounts, the dark web communications, and the direct wire transfers from Vanessa’s account to Marcus Vance.”

At the mention of Marcus Vance, Michael’s face lost every remaining drop of color. He staggered backward, hitting the glass window behind him.

“Marcus Vance was arrested an hour ago at John F. Kennedy Airport while trying to board a flight to Dubai,” Detective Miller added calmly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “He gave a full confession, Mr. Sterling. He named you as the mastermind who instructed him to cut the primary and secondary brake lines on Mrs. Sterling’s SUV.”

The room went dead silent once more. The executives, who had worked alongside Michael for years, looked at him with absolute disgust.

“You tried to murder your wife for money,” one of the senior board members spat, turning his back on Michael.

Michael looked around the room, finding no allies, no escape, and no hope. His eyes darted to me, filled with a sudden, ugly, feral rage.

“You ruined everything!” he screamed, lunging across the table toward me, his hands reaching for my throat. “You were supposed to die in that car!”

Before he could even cross the table, Detective Miller and two officers tackled him to the ground. The heavy thud of his body hitting the floor echoed through the room, followed by the metallic click of handcuffs snapping around his wrists.

They hauled him to his feet, his tailored suit rumpled, his hair messy, his face twisted in pathetic desperation.

“Valerie, please!” Michael sobbed, changing tactics instantly as he realized his doom was sealed. “Think about Leo! Think about our family! I was sick, I was desperate! We can fix this!”

I stepped up to him, looking down into the eyes of the man I had once loved, feeling nothing but profound pity and absolute disdain.

I reached out my hand, reached up to Vanessa’s neck, and unclasped my vintage diamond necklace from her throat with a single, smooth movement.

“You don't get to mention my son’s name,” I whispered, staring into Michael’s soul. “You are going to a cold, dark cell for the rest of your natural life. And every single day you sit there, you will remember that I am out here, living a grand life, raising our son, and spending every single dollar you tried to steal.”

I turned to Detective Miller. “Take them away.”

The officers dragged Michael and Vanessa out of the boardroom, their frantic screams and desperate pleas echoing down the hallway until the heavy elevator doors slid shut, cutting them off forever.
