Chapter 9 - The Promise of Tomorrow

That evening, after the guests had gone and the yard was quiet again, Marcus and I took Ava down to the local park. The summer twilight was long and golden, the sky a bruised purple at the edges.

Ava ran ahead of us toward the playground, her hair flying behind her, her laughter echoing across the empty green grass. She was nine now, growing taller, her face losing the round softness of early childhood and taking on the bright, sharp lines of a girl who knew she was safe, loved, and protected.

Marcus wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side as we walked slowly behind her.

"I have a question for you," he said, his voice quiet, almost nervous.

"Oh? A business question or a personal one?" I teased, leaning into him.

"Very personal," he said. He stopped walking, turning me to face him under the shade of a large willow tree. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, navy blue velvet box.

My heart skipped a beat.

"Ellie, I’ve loved you since the days we were surviving on cold pizza in that tiny shared office space," Marcus said, his eyes shining with an intensity that made my breath catch. "But watching you become the woman you are over the past year—watching you stand up for yourself, for Ava, and build this incredible life out of sheer strength—has been the greatest honor of my life. I don’t want to be your business partner anymore. I want to be your husband. If you’ll have me."

He opened the box. Inside was a simple, elegant emerald ring—my favorite stone, not a diamond. He had remembered a passing comment I made three years ago during a client dinner. He had listened. He had always listened.

Ava had stopped running and was watching us from the swings, a huge grin spreading across her face.

The tears came then, but they weren't the hot, burning tears of exhaustion from the ICU room. They were cool, sweet, and clean.

"Yes," I whispered, stepping into his arms. "Yes, Marcus. Absolutely."

He slid the ring onto my finger, and it fit perfectly. He pulled me into a kiss that tasted like summer and safety, while Ava cheered from the playground, running over to throw her arms around both of our her legs, sandwiching herself into the middle of our embrace.

"Does this mean Marcus is officially my stepdad?" she asked, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes.

"It does, kiddo," Marcus said, kneeling down to her level and pulling her onto his knee. "It means we’re an official team now."

"We’ve always been a team," Ava said matter-of-factly, hugging his neck.
