Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Ethan Warren

For the next four days, Ethan Warren learned what it meant to exist without the shield of my money.
Deprived of access to the trust funds, his personal credit cards bounced everywhere he went. He was forced to pay cash for his motel room—cash he had to borrow from his few remaining friends, who were already growing distant as rumors of the police raid on Oakridge Lane began to circulate through our social circle.
On Friday morning, blissfully unaware of the federal criminal investigation wrapping around his neck, Ethan put on his best suit and showed up at the corporate headquarters of Sterling & Croft Real Estate. He believed he could carry on as normal, secure a major commission check from a pending commercial deal, and use those funds to hire a high-priced divorce lawyer to fight the restraining order.
He walked into the glass-walled lobby at 8:50 AM, nodding arrogantly at the receptionist.
"Good morning, Sarah," he said, smoothing his tie. "Is Arthur in his office yet?"
Sarah didn't look up. She simply pointed toward the main boardroom. "Mr. Sterling is waiting for you in Boardroom A, Ethan. Along with HR and two legal representatives."
Ethan paused, a sudden knot forming in his stomach. He smoothed his jacket and opened the frosted glass door of Boardroom A.
Sitting at the long mahogany table was Arthur Sterling, the firm's founding partner—a sharp, white-haired patriarch who treated reputation as sacred ground. Next to him was the firm's head of Human Resources, and standing near the window was Owen Price.
"Arthur," Ethan stammered, forcing a fake smile. "What's going on? Why is Claire's estate lawyer standing in our corporate board meeting?"
Arthur Sterling slowly placed a pair of reading glasses on the table. Beside his hand sat a thick folder containing the ER medical report, the police photos of my bruised face, and the forensic digital evidence of Ethan’s attempt to execute a fraudulent $2 million mortgage loan using Sterling & Croft's internal client portal.
"Ethan," Arthur said, his voice dropping like a heavy iron gate. "Over thirty years ago, Evelyn Vance—Claire's mother—was our firm's very first major commercial investor. Her trust accounts generate over $400,000 in annual commission fees for this agency. We built our high-net-worth department on her family’s reputation."
"Arthur, whatever Claire or her lawyer told you, it's a complete lie!" Ethan shouted, stepping toward the table. "She's emotionally unstable! She fell down the stairs during an argument! She's trying to ruin my life because I called out her unfit behavior as a mother!"
Owen Price stepped forward, placing a tablet on the center of the table. He pressed play.
The high-definition video from the sheriff’s deputy's body camera played instantly. Ethan’s own voice echoed through the room: “If Mom wants you gone, you’re gone.” Followed by the loud, brutal crack of his hand striking my face, and the sound of my body hitting the wall.
Arthur Sterling closed his eyes briefly, disgust clearly written across his features.
"You struck a six-month pregnant woman," Arthur said softly, staring at Ethan with utter contempt. "You struck Evelyn Vance's daughter in a house funded by her estate. And then you utilized our firm’s proprietary mortgage network to commit felony loan fraud against her trust."
"I... I can explain the loan documents..." Ethan squeaked, his confidence shattering instantly. "It was an investment strategy! We were going to double the capital!"
"You are terminated effective immediately for cause under Section 8 of your corporate contract," Arthur announced, standing up. "Your real estate license has been reported to the State Real Estate Commission with a recommendation for immediate emergency revocation. Furthermore..."
Arthur nodded toward two men standing near the secondary exit.
"...the United States Attorney's Office has issued an arrest warrant for financial fraud, bank forgery, and wire fraud."
The door opened, and two Federal Special Agents in dark suits walked into the boardroom.
"Ethan Warren," the lead agent said, producing a pair of steel handcuffs. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."
Ethan looked wildly around the room. He looked at Arthur, who turned his back to him. He looked at Owen, who met his frantic gaze with cold, unwavering indifference.
As the steel cuffs clicked around Ethan's wrists, his phone rang inside his jacket pocket. The screen flashed with his mother's name: MOM.

"Can I answer that?" Ethan wept, the tears finally bursting through his pompous facade. "Please, it's my mother!"
"You can make one phone call from the federal holding facility," the agent replied, escorting the weeping former real estate broker out through the back service elevator so the rest of the office wouldn't see him—a courtesy he certainly did not deserve.
