Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Two years later, the golden afternoon sun streamed through the large bay windows of The Three Sisters Bakery & Café.
Outside on the wooden deck, two toddlers with bright curls and infectious giggles chased a golden retriever in circles, their high-pitched laughter mixing with the sound of the ocean waves.
I stood behind the counter, dusting flour from my hands as I arranged a fresh batch of raspberry tarts—white chocolate and raspberries, a quiet nod to a past that could no longer hurt me.
The front door chimed.
A man walked in, wearing a simple flannel shirt and jeans, carrying a toolbox in one hand. He stopped by the counter, leaning over to press a tender, lingering kiss to my cheek.
“You’ve got flour on your nose again, Mrs. Bennett,” Daniel murmured with a warm, teasing smile.
I laughed, wiping my nose with the back of my hand. “Shut up and go fix the front gate before Sophie figures out how to open it again.”
“Yes, ma'am,” Daniel replied, his eyes dancing with a happiness he had spent years learning how to earn.
He walked out to the deck, dropping down to his knees as both toddlers shrieked with delight and threw their arms around his neck, tackling him to the grass. He laughed, lifting them both high into the air against the backdrop of the endless, beautiful ocean.
I watched them from the window, feeling the profound, unbreakable warmth in my chest.

We had found a true beginning.
