Chapter 9 - The Verdict of Healing

Judge Carter did not hesitate. She didn't even retire to her chambers to deliberate.
"This is one of the most egregious cases of family manipulation, fraud, and child endangerment I have ever seen in my fifteen years on the bench," Judge Carter declared, her voice echoing with authority.
She turned her gaze to Patricia, who was now weeping, though they were tears of anger, not remorse.
"Patricia Vance, your actions are not those of a loving grandmother. They are the actions of a calculated, abusive predator. Outside the courtroom, the child advocate brought Sophie down. She looked up at me, her eyes questioning.
I knelt down and pulled her into a hug. "It's over, Soph. We won. We are safe. No one is ever going to try to take you away again."

She squeezed my neck tightly. "We're safe?"
"We're safe," I whispered.
