Part 2: The Secret Martin Price Buried Twenty Years Ago

The hospital room fell silent except for the beeping of monitors.
Caleb stared at his father.
"Dad, what the hell is wrong with you?"
Martin wiped his mouth with a trembling hand.
"Ray..." he whispered.
My uncle didn't move.
He simply rolled down his sleeve and looked at Martin the way a judge looks at a man who already knows his sentence.
"You remember me."
Martin's breathing became shallow.
Caleb laughed nervously.
"Okay, enough of this weird old-man drama. Dad, sit down."
But Martin grabbed his son's arm so hard Caleb winced.
"Shut up."
The room froze.
For the first time in his life, Caleb looked afraid of his own father.
Ray pulled a chair closer to my bed and sat beside me.
"How long?" he asked.
I knew exactly what he meant.
"Three years."
The answer made his jaw tighten.
"And your parents?"
"They don't know everything."
Ray nodded.
Then he looked directly at Caleb.
"Did you put your hands around her throat?"
Caleb rolled his eyes.
"It wasn't like that."
"Answer."
Something in Ray's voice made even the nurses outside stop talking.
Caleb swallowed.
"Yeah."
Ray nodded once.
No anger.
No shouting.
Just a nod.
And somehow that was worse.
Martin suddenly stood.
"We need to leave."
Caleb looked stunned.
"What?"
"We leave. Right now."
"Dad, are you insane?"
Martin looked at him with genuine terror.
"You don't understand who this man is."
Ray sighed.
"No. Tell him."
Martin stared at the floor.
Twenty years earlier, before Caleb was born, Martin had been part of a criminal smuggling operation moving weapons across state lines.
A young military investigator had spent two years dismantling the entire network.
Thirty-seven arrests.
Millions seized.
Three major crime families destroyed.
The investigator's name was Raymond Carter.
My Uncle Ray.
Caleb laughed.
"That's it? He's a retired cop?"
Martin's face twisted.
"He wasn't a cop."
Ray remained silent.
Martin whispered the next words.
"He was the man they sent when talking was over."
The color drained from Caleb's face.
I had never heard this story before.
Apparently neither had anyone else.
Ray leaned forward.
"I left that life behind a long time ago."
Then his eyes hardened.
"But I never stopped protecting my family."
At that exact moment, the hospital door opened.
Two police officers stepped inside.
Behind them stood Nurse Jessica.
The same nurse who had quietly photographed the bruises on my neck during her morning checkup.
Caleb jumped to his feet.
"What is this?"
One officer answered.
"Mr. Price, we'd like to ask you some questions regarding domestic assault."
For the first time, Caleb looked at me.
Not with anger.
Not with ownership.
With fear.
May you like
Real fear.
And he finally realized he was losing control.
