Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

While Daniel was being grilled in an interrogation room downtown, my legal team was systematically dismantling his entire existence.
Arthur Sterling didn't waste a single second. By noon, a team of forensic accountants from Sterling & Vance had obtained emergency freeze orders on all of our joint bank accounts, corporate investment portfolios, and hidden assets. To our utter disgust, the investigation revealed that Daniel hadn’t just been spending our savings on Vanessa’s rent; he had been systematically liquidating college funds and retirement accounts to buy her luxury handbags, high-end jewelry, and a sleek sports car registered under a fictitious LLC.
I sat in Arthur’s plush, mahogany-paneled office overlooking the city skyline, reviewing the financial audit spread across the massive glass desk.
“He was remarkably arrogant, but shockingly sloppy,” Arthur noted, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “People who commit white-collar crimes always assume they’re the smartest person in the room. By using his hospital credentials to misappropriate drugs and funneling marital assets into a mistress’s lifestyle, he committed both criminal fraud and gross marital waste.”
“Can we strip him of everything?” I asked, leaning forward. “The house, the cars, his pension?”
“Not only can we strip him of everything, Emily, but under our state’s ‘dissipation of assets’ statute, the court can award you up to one hundred percent of the remaining marital estate due to his egregious breach of fiduciary duty,” Arthur smiled grimly. “Furthermore, because his criminal actions directly endangered a minor, his parental rights are severely compromised. He won't just be broke; he’ll be fighting to stay out of a federal penitentiary.”
Just then, the conference room door opened, and my divorce petition was handed to me. It was a thick, binding document containing ironclad clauses for full custody, forfeiture of all assets, and a permanent restraining order against both Daniel and Vanessa Cole.
I signed every page without a single moment of hesitation.
Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Vanessa Cole was experiencing her own catastrophic reality check. Unaware that Daniel had been arrested, Vanessa had strutted into the hospital pharmacy later that afternoon, expecting to pick up her next refill. Instead, she was met by two security guards and hospital HR representatives who immediately slapped her with an immediate termination notice for receiving stolen medical property.
When Vanessa tried to scream and protest, claiming that Daniel had authorized it, the HR director handed her a copy of the police report and a formal banishment notice barring her from setting foot on hospital grounds ever again.
Panic-stricken, Vanessa tried calling Daniel’s cell phone over and over. Of course, her calls went straight to voicemail—because Daniel’s phone was currently sitting in an evidence locker at the police precinct, next to his designer watch and wallet.

Deserted by her wealthy sugar daddy, fired from her job, facing potential criminal charges for receiving stolen medical goods, and realizing that her luxury lifestyle had evaporated overnight, Vanessa packed her bags and fled her apartment by midnight. But unbeknownst to her, Arthur’s investigators had already slapped a civil lien on her condo and seized every asset Daniel had ever gifted her, classifying them as stolen property purchased with embezzled marital funds.
Daniel’s meticulously constructed house of cards had collapsed into dust in less than forty-eight hours.
