Chapter 9 - The Trial of Denver

The aftermath of that fateful morning shook the entire state of Colorado to its core.

The micro-drive Mason had swallowed—and which I successfully handed over to Special Agent Reed—contained thousands of internal emails, financial transfers, and chemical testing reports proving that Apex Bio-Tech had knowingly poisoned local communities and paid millions to cover it up.

Mayor Richard Vance was arrested at his campaign headquarters three hours later live on local news. His wife, Detective Vance, was cuffed directly in the hospital hallway where Dr. Pierce had knocked her out.

The corruption network was dismantled from the top down. Over twenty high-ranking city officials, police commanders, and corporate executives were indicted on federal charges including conspiracy, bribery, toxic dumping, and attempted aggravated murder.

For three long weeks, St. Mercy Hospital became our home—but this time, as a place of healing rather than a scene of terror.

Laura woke up from her coma six days after the attack.

I was sitting in the chair beside her bed, holding her hand, when her eyes slowly opened.

"Ethan..." she rasped, her voice weak and scratchy.

I fell to my knees beside her bed, burying my face in her shoulder as I sobbed uncontrollably. "Laura... oh God, Laura..."

"Is Noah... is Noah okay?" she asked, tears pooling in her eyes.

"He's safe," I choked out, kissing her forehead over and over again. "He's safe. He's in the room right next door. He's going to be completely fine."

"Mason?" she whispered.

"Mason made it too," I smiled through my tears. "His kidneys are recovering. The doctors say he'll make a full recovery."

Laura let out a deep, trembling sigh of relief, squeezing my hand with all the strength she had left. "I'm so sorry, Ethan... I wanted to tell you... but Mason said if you knew, they would target you too. We were trying to get the proof to the feds before they found out..."

"Shh," I hushed her gently, resting my forehead against hers. "You don't have to apologize for anything. You saved lives, Laura. You and Mason stopped monsters."

Two weeks later, the day came for all three of them to be discharged.

The hospital lobby was filled with nurses, doctors, and staff who had lined up to clap for our family. Dr. Pierce stood at the exit doors, smiling warmly with his arms crossed.

I walked up to my senior doctor and pulled him into a tight embrace. "I owe you everything, Pierce. You saved my family."

"You saved them yourself, Ethan," Pierce smiled, patting my back. "Now take your family home."
