Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Battle

The county courthouse was cold and imposing.
Emily sat beside me in the hallway, her hand locked in mine. She looked pale but resolute. We were dressed in sharp, conservative clothes, carrying a thick binder of evidence prepared by Sarah.
At the end of the hall stood my mother, flanked by my father and her high-priced attorney, Arthur Vance. My mother was dressed in soft pastels, wearing a delicate pearl necklace, looking every bit the picture of a heartbroken, frail grandmother. The transformation was terrifying.
When the bailiff called our case, we filed into the courtroom.
Judge Eleanor Vance—a formidable woman with decades of family law experience—presided over the bench.
My mother’s lawyer took the floor first. “Your Honor, my client, Mrs. Eleanor Vance, is a devoted mother and grandmother who has been cruelly severed from her newborn grandson due to the sudden, paranoid outbursts of the child’s mother, Emily. We are requesting immediate temporary visitation rights and a court-ordered psychological assessment of the mother.”
Arthur Vance presented his argument smoothly, painting Emily as unstable and portraying my mother as a loving matriarch who had merely tried to intervene out of concern for the baby’s safety.
When it was our turn, Sarah stood up calmly.
“Your Honor,” Sarah began, her voice steady and echoing clearly in the chamber. “The petitioner’s narrative is not only false; it is a calculated attempt to cover up a violent criminal act.”
Sarah submitted our evidence bundle: the official police report, the hospital medical records documenting Emily’s bruises and pulled hair, and the clear audio recording from our hallway camera.
“We request permission to play Exhibit C, the audio recording from the day of the assault,” Sarah stated.
My mother’s attorney objected immediately, but Judge Vance overruled him. “I will hear the audio.”
The courtroom went dead silent as the recording played. My mother’s shrill, angry voice filled the room, followed by the clear sounds of physical struggle and Emily’s desperate pleas to protect her baby.
As the audio played, I watched Judge Vance’s expression shift from neutral tolerance to deep, cold disgust.
When the recording ended, Judge Vance looked over her glasses directly at my mother. “Mrs. Vance, is that your voice on the recording?”
My mother panicked. The gentle, fragile persona vanished in an instant. She stood up from her chair, pointing a finger at Sarah. “That recording is edited! They fabricated it! That girl is insane! She shouldn't be allowed to raise my blood!”

“Sit down, Mrs. Vance!” Judge Vance slammed her gavel. “Sit down immediately or I will hold you in contempt!”
My father tried to pull my mother down, but she shoved his hand away, her face twisting into the same terrifying mask of rage I had seen in the nursery. “You can't do this to me! He is MY grandson!”
